Free Music Review: fine collection of ballads from a seasoned Peter, Paul & Mary
Hit: 5 Stars

Peter, Paul & Mary released this terrific album back in 2003. This album gives us a great selection of songs performed by a more mature group with very special melodies and lyrics as well.

The track set begins with the "Union Medley: You Gotta Go Down And Join The Union/Put It On The Ground/Union Maid/We Shall Not Be Moved/Which Side Are You On?" The musical arrangement for the medley has a great arrangement for the guitar and this fine trio never misses a beat! Peter, Paul & Mary sing of how important it is to stand up for your rights as a worker; and they do it with panache and a singular beauty I rarely enjoy. Great! "Have You Been To Jail For Justice?" continues in the same vein; Peter, Paul & Mary sing of the importance of peaceful civil disobedience as a strong tool to challenge unfair authorities to make this world a better place for us all. Again, "Have You Been To Jail For Justice?" has a great guitar arrangement even though the group's vocals remain squarely in the spotlight.

"Jesus Is On The Wire" refers to the tragedy of how Matthew Shepard was brutally murdered in Wyoming just because he was gay. The melancholy melody uses both guitars and electric guitars to create a stunning effect; and Mary sings this flawlessly. Peter, Paul & Mary also deliver "Don't Laugh At Me" with great sensitivity; they sing of how we all must be respectful of people who may look different or who are different than us. Great ballad--and the trio harmonizes to perfection, too.

"Invisible People" adds a harmonica to the beautiful guitar arrangement to bolster this number; and Peter, Paul & Mary sing passionately of people who came to our nation to make a better life for themselves. They also refer to the brutality American settlers inflicted upon the Native Americans as they moved westward during the years of "Manifest Destiny." I predict that you will enjoy "Invisible People" very much.

"All God's Critters" sports a country beat to it as our fine trio sing this without a superfluous note! Peter, Paul & Mary celebrate the beauty of how all God's creatures--including humans--have their rightful place in life. Great! "Oh, Had I A Golden Thread," the last tune on this CD, opens with a beautiful guitar arrangement as the trio sing to make this ballad take flight! "Oh, Had I A Golden Thread" celebrates life and diversity; and it also provides a strong ending for this CD.

The liner notes include the lyrics to all the songs on this CD; and the artwork impresses me greatly. We also get the song credits.

Peter, Paul & Mary continue to spread their message of peace through folk rock and country style ballads that charm me with their beauty. Hopefully, Peter, Paul & Mary will continue to entertain people for many years to come.

I highly recommend this CD for fans of Peter, Paul & Mary; and persons who like folk rock and the artistry of stars like Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger will appreciate this CD as well.

Enjoy, everyone! Thank you, Peter, Paul & Mary!

In These Times Poster

Peter, Paul and Mary released their first LP in 1962, and--apart from an early-'70s hiatus--they have been going strong ever since. In These Times, their 2004 release, doesn't really tinker with the formula that propelled them into the spotlight all those years ago, but if the canny blend of traditional tunes, social commentary, and contemporary compositions still works, why change it? Their voices no longer have the vigor and clarity they once did, but on songs like "Jesus on the Wire," a stark mediation on the death of Matthew Shepard composed by Thea Hopkins, or the folk classic "Wayfaring Stranger," the whispery tone and wobbling harmonies add poignancy to the hard-earned authority of the performances. In its basic format, In These Times recalls Peter, Paul and Mary's earlier recordings, but the songs themselves, most of which were composed in the last few years, show that the trio has successfully resisted the urge to wallow in nostalgia. --Michael John Simmons
