Free Music Review: Extremely Annoying Slack-Rock - Waaaay Overrated

I'm totally amazed at all the praise this album and this band gets. If you dig pretentious, smug idie rock with virtually zero concern for sounding in tune let alone sounding like it can pry itself off the couch, this band is for you. Stephen Malkmus doesn't even TRY to sing in tune. I have to assume he's tone deaf. The guitars can sound kind of cool and even innovative at times, drawing comparisons to Dinosaur Jr. (also "slack rock" - but much better). But more often than not, they're just too atonal with too many off-key notes to be enjoyable.
This album does mangage to muster up some energy, but again, it sounds like a slacker bitching and "rebelling" while splayed out on a couch after a few beers. Maybe it's because I myself am somewhat of a slacker that I find this album to be so annoying. I've got enough slacker crap going on in my own life that I need music to escape from it, not wallow in it.
Back in the 90's, I heard a crappy Pavement song called "Range Life" in which they diss the Smashing Pumpkins. I immediately concluded that I didn't need any of that rank negativity in my life, especially from such a crappy band and I never listened to them again after that. Having recently come across this CD at the library, I borrowed it out of curiosity seeing how Blender magazine rated it the #1 Indie Album of All Time (even though I'm well aware that that magazine, let alone any music critic, is highly unreliable). It didn't take long to realize my initial assessment of this band was correct - this album sucks!
Slanted & Enchanted Poster
Two smart young college guys with a bunch of catchy, cryptic songs and a taste for peculiar sonics go into a studio with a showboating older drummer and come out with one of the definitive indie-rock albums. Beneath its coils of raw distortion and screaming-for-the-hell-of-it, Pavement's first full-length disc gets over on the strength of stellar songwriting and ingenious melodicism. Sometimes Steve Malkmus's sly, evocative word-games reveal genuine emotion ("Here"), and sometimes they just pay tribute to his favorite bands ("Conduit For Sale!" is a nod to the Fall), but these songs are unconventional in a way that set the convention for bands that came after them. --Douglas WolkAlternative Rock Music CDs
