Free Music Review: Fantasy/Concord Rights An Epic Wrong!
Hit: 5 Stars

For all those wondering if, as promised, Fantasy/Concord fixed the major mistakes they made with initial pressings of the 2006 "A Charlie Brown Christmas" remaster, the answer is a resounding "YES"!

After much comparing and contrasting of the waveforms from three editions of the album (the original 1988 reissue, the original 2006 remaster, and the updated 2006 remaster) I can, without a doubt, tell you that the two songs in question ("Linus And Lucy" and "Christmas Is Coming") on the updated 2006 remaster match the original 1988 reissue note for note.

Purists may scoff, but if you've been putting off purchasing the 2006 remaster of "A Charlie Brown Christmas," due to what you may have heard about the epic wrongs committed by Fantasy/Concord on the initial pressings of the album, don't wait any longer! Buy it for the nostalgia factor, listen to it because it's the edition you've always wanted (in the too cool digipak!), and keep it because of the first rate sound quality. Honestly, this album has never sounded so full and rich!

And even if you lovingly own the 1988 CD reissue (like I do), you may surprise yourself by how often you reach for the 2006 edition instead. There IS room for two "A Charlie Brown Christmas" albums in your life, trust me!

Free Music Review: Guaraldi's masterpiece
Hit: 5 Stars

Of all the holiday programs that have become perennial favorites, none quite capture the true spirit of yuletide like the 1965 animated classic that introduced Charles Schulz's hapless hero to TV viewers. While other shows melt away into gray colored slush, Charlie Brown's search for the true meaning of Christmas remains as white and pure as it did on its first broadcast.

Much of the timeless appeal of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" can be traced to Vince Guaraldi's brilliant score, head and heels above the soundtracks to most holiday programming. Like the best soundtracks, it stands on its own as a rich listening experience. "Christmas Time Is Here" and "Skating" are classics as essential to the season as a brightly lit tree, but every track is a standout. I can't imagine Christmas without the music of Vince Guaraldi.

This newly refurbished reissue, with several alternate tracks, may or may not be an improvement on the edition that's been available through the years (it all depends on the quality of the sound system you hear it on), but the music, refurbished or not, is brilliant.

Free Music Review: They're in my living room!
Hit: 5 Stars

For the first time in my life, I truly heard the upright bass in "Linus & Lucy". I felt the church organ in "Hark The Herald Angels Sing" and got nervous that I didn't have anything to offer the kids chorus that was obviously singing right in front of me... This essential holiday record needs to be (re)experienced by anyone who loves it and played for the unlucky few who've never heard it. The packaging is beautiful (the animation cell in the front window is SO fitting & clever and the original design is a welcomed and appreciated change) and the sound - well, it's exquisite. Oh, did I mention there are bonus tracks? Do yourself a favor - add this reissue to your collection. It's mandatory listening for the holiday season. Even if you think you know it - you've never heard it like this before. And, while it would be nice to pass your old copy onto someone who doesn't know what a great album this is - if you like that person, you'll have them get this reissue, too.

Free Music Review: Probably the best Christmas Album ever, but this new edition is a missed opportunity...
Hit: 5 Stars

While the packaging appears first rate and the improved sound quality seems promising, I'm disappointed to see they missed this opportunity to include three tracks that were in the special but never on the album.

They are "Surfin' Snoopy" (plays as Snoopy decorates his house), "Charlie Brown Theme" (plays while Charlie Brown is going over his director signals), and "Jingle Bells", which is of course, Lucy's request to Schroder. The first two were included on the compilation "Charlie Brown's Holiday Hits", but it's a shame we couldn't have them all under one roof instead of the alternate takes. Yes, they are short pieces of background music and don't hold up well on their own (certainly not as well as Guaraldi's masterpieces that were always featured on the album we all know and love), but when your including bonus tracks, why not include them?

It remains a five star recording though...

Free Music Review: Its not Christmas without music from Charlie Brown
Hit: 5 Stars

Composer Vince Guaraldi created a special, memorable spirit of Christmas with his version of the holiday music in the famous animated Peanuts special. I've always felt this show should be one of those things all children should experience, with its life lessons and innocent and funny situations that young and old alike can appreciate. Plus, the exposure of the memorable and timeless music proves there's more to talented muscians than the current rap and hip hop kids are overwhelmed with. I appreciate the chance to hear all the authentic music from the show on one CD like this one.
