Free Music Notes for Live on Two LegsFree Music Review: Interesting live stuff Hit: 5 Stars
Well, the main problem with Pearl Jam today is Ed Vedder's voice. What happened? His growling baritone seems to have caved in on him; now, when he goes for those powerful roars, like on "Even Flow," his voice just gives out. It's kind of depressing; for all their musical genius, Pearl Jam's heart and soul is really Vedder's voice. But as for the rest of this record, Pearl Jam are still awesome live. It's actually good to be able to hear songs from their different albums together; it doesn't sound as weird as listening to each album separately. Belive it or not, the songs actually sound good together. While of course they had to play the rebels and refuse to include any of their huge mainstream hits (except for "Even Flow"), the collection of songs here is pretty good on its own. The previously unreleased "Untitled" is a pretty good melodic tune, and the Neil Young cover is great. But the two best moments on the album are the lengthy rendition of "Daughter," which has Vedder adding some new lyrics, and then adding a verse from their song "W.M.A."; and the great job they did on "Black," with the 2-minute ending guitar solo. Overall this is a great addition to any Pearl Jam fan's collection.
Free Music Review: One of the greatest live albums of the 1990's. Hit: 5 Stars
In my mind, Pearl Jam can do no wrong. So, in a nutshell, I'm a little biased. To be fair, though, if you like at least one of Pearl Jam's albums, you'll have plenty to chew on here, and it's worth the time. There isn't a weak track on here, as Pearl Jam goes through its back catalog and serves up energetic, inspired live versions of some of their great tracks. Not all of their hits are on here ("Alive", "Animal", "Wishlist", and "Spin The Black Circle", among others, are missing), and that's good, because live greatest hits albums are predictable and boring. That's why Rolling Stones live albums (the recent ones, anyway) are so strong, you expect the unexpected. Underappreciated album tracks such as "MFC", "Off He Goes", "Nothingman", and "Red Mosquito" sound better than ever, and there's even a Neil Young cover on here, and it's well done. This is not only a great starting place for the casual fan ("Ten" and "Yield" are also great starting points), but it's a real kick for a diehard such as myself. Very much recommended, and I'm looking forward to a possible second live album.
Free Music Review: The Cleanest Live Album You Will Ever Hear Hit: 5 Stars
These tracks were mastered by a genius. This album starts out with the best live version of "Corduroy" I have ever heard. "Off He Goes" will put a shiver down your spine. "Daughter" will blow your mind you as PJ breaks into a cover of "Rockin in the Free World" with a little "WMA" thrown in as well. My favorite track on this album has to be "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town", Eddie's vocals are perfect throughout the album. You can really tell PJ put a lot of time and effort into the selection of tracks from each of the shows. This was originally going to be a 2 disc set but they put so much into this they didn't have time to do the second CD. With the songs they chose you will never miss it. You get a full representation of all past releases. If you like even one of PJ's tunes you need to own this CD. It sounds like they packed 30,000 people into a studio to record this. I can't say enough good things about this album to do it justice. The only thing missing here is "Yellow Ledbetter". But I believe they made up for it. Beg, borrow, steal, just get this album!
Free Music Review: A must have!! Hit: 5 Stars
This CD is great!! If you have been to a Pearl Jam concert (or even if you haven't) this CD will give you a great account of what they are like. The selection could have been a little better (it's missing crowd favorites like Jeremy, Alive, Brain of J, etc) but the songs that were selected for the lineup work well together. They give you a complete survey of Pearl Jam's work. Eddie sounds great on all the songs. I think Pearl Jam (aside from the Indigo Girls) is one of the only bands that sound better live than they do on a CD. You can hear much more emotion. My only real complaint about this CD is that you can't hear the crowd. At the concert the crowd was so into the music that every song was a sing-a-long and hearing that on songs like Given to Fly, Nothingman, and Better Man made them so wonderful to hear. On this CD you only hear the crowd before and after each song. I would have liked to have been able to hear the crowd sing along with Eddie. Highlights on the disk: "Given to Fly", "Daughter", "Untitled", aw hell, they're all good. Just buy the CD and listen for yourself.
Free Music Review: Pearl Jam Rocks Live Hit: 5 Stars
Pearl Jam, while in the midst of creating a new album, has recorded a live album as a token guesture to its most loyal fans. Tracks such as "Courderoy" and "Do the Evolution" are fresh with the raw energy of a live concert, while the more scerene tracks such as "Nothingman" and "F*ckin' Up" show the softer and more compassionate side of Eddie. (After all, with the songs "Daughter" and "Better Man" feeding the estrogen point of view, Eddie demonstrates that he would make a respectable wife, not to mention one hell of a therapist.) Those who enjoy the musical stew of ear candy from the likes of Sugar Ray or Eagle-Eye Cherry, and who know Pearl Jam only for "Jeremy" will be disappointed; "Even Flow" is the only "hit" included (from Ten, their 1991 album of mainstream-friendly "hits"). By combining the more interesting tracks off of their later albums, Pearl Jam proves that they can still deliver the goods, and will continue to do so long after N'Sync and Britney Spears fade into the wallpaper of pop "has-beens".
