Free Music Notes for Lost DogsFree Music Review: A Fans' Fantasy Hit: 5 Stars
Like any other fan, I was really looking forward to the release of this little compilation of B-sides and rarities by my favorite band. When I finally got the album I was delighted to see that all the hard to get hold of gems like "Yellow Ledbetter", "Wash" and "Bee Girl" were all present. Some of these "dicarded" tracks such as "Footsteps" and "Sad" would have easily been able to hold their own on any of PJ's previous albums. There are some songs on the album that wouldn't really impress a non-fan who bought it speculatively, but that would any longtime PJ fan quiver with delight. The mood of the album is constantly changing from deep and sometimes dark on tracks like "Alone" to a more free spirited vibe with songs like "Don't Gimme No Lip" (With Vocals By Stone). All in all this is any Pearl Jam fans' fantasy. If you are a real fan of the band, Lost Dogs is an absolute must-have and with two discs worth of music, it's not a bad buy for anyone else either. I'll tell you this though: If you're not into Pearl Jam, but want to get into them, I'd suggest that you rather get some of their older recordings like "Ten" or "Yield" instead, because this album might be a little hard to digest if you're not fimiliar with the band.
Free Music Review: Pearl Jam Taking Care Of Their Fans Hit: 5 Stars
Pearl Jam does the rarities record with the same style and class that they lend to all of their releases. This two-disc set is loaded with some of their best work. This band has not been greedy about giving some of their best songs away as charity album contributions or releasing them as B-sides. Also unbelievably, they have left some of their best songs off their official releases because they did not fit the flow of the album (this is not boasting, the proof is here).
Honestly, I have not gotten to the bottom of this set yet, it is the kind of recording that you can come back to over the months and years and always find new things to appreciate. Just off the top of my head, the tip of the iceberg of treasures collected here include:
Yellow Ledbetter: (perhaps THE fan favorite)
Leavin' Here: (Wherein Eddie first reveals his love of the early Who)
Hitchhiker (Currently my favorite song on the record)
Gremmie Out of Control (goofy surf tune)
As other reviewers have mentioned, the detailed liner notes are the icing on the cake. Eddie is a giant Pete Townsend fan and you know he had one eye on the Scoop records and the expanded Odds & Sods when the band was formulating this great release.
Free Music Review: Amazing Compilation of Essential PJ Rarities Hit: 5 Stars
30 great b-sides, rarities, and unreleased tracks to please any Pearl Jam fan. I was thrilled to hear the early b-sides (Alone, Footsteps, Dirty Frank) plus the import release of TEN closing track Wash to remember the band in its heyday, and equally enjoyed Riot Act's extra track Down - excellent. These coulda-been hits are interspersed with other cuts that either never made the studio albums or were on benefit albums (Whale Song) for a truly enjoyable selection. No, not every song is a classic (though Last Kiss is included, which was perhaps one of their biggest radio hits, as well as Yellow Ledbetter, which enjoyed some radio play in 1993 and is now a concert-closing staple). But even the eclectic songs (Black, Red, Yellow - complete with Dennis Rodman's voice, and Sweet Lew) are interesting to listen to. I marveled at the instrumental genius of Brother and the quiet intensity of Dead Man Walking. Anyone who has followed Pearl Jam this far would enjoy this collection. For a compilation of "extras", the material here is stronger than many bands' actual releases. Plus, LOST DOGS includes interesting liner notes with todbits about each song from different members of the band. What a treat!
Free Music Review: five stars all the way man! Hit: 5 Stars
I love this CD and it really shows us how versatile these guys are(are they aliens?) this collection is awesome. there are a few tracks missing...but hey...now we gotta wait for the third "collectors edition" Lost Dogs CD. I also don't agree with the need of including the "merking ball" EP nor the "singles soundtrack" 'cause they're albums on their own. I would've liked more Christmas vinyl tracks though...and other single rarities like Out of my Mind, etc.I DO HAVE TWO SIMPLE DOUBTS THAT ONLY THE BAND OR A SUPER FAN COULD ANSWER: is the original version of Dirty Frank(well the one featured on the single) played by Dave Krusen...I only know the drumming on the altered version is more mellow...or is it that Abruzeeze always played it for he is the composer? or what does the altering exactly consist on then? Is the Footsteps take exactly the same as the original but with some remastering and harmonica mixed in? just wondering! Anyway...buy this CD!!!...it's really worth it...and don't pay attention to any crummy reviews! I also think it's cool that almost all the songs are slightly different to the originals: this way nothing we already had is actually repeated!
Free Music Review: all you other reviewers are lame Hit: 5 Stars
first off, music isn't meant to be classified. grunge was a fashion movement, and had little to do with specific music. It was just the fact they were all poor, and had to wear 50 cent dickies flannels from the goodwill, or wherever cheap shirts come from in Seattle. Therefore, pearl jam, alice, soundgarden, nirvana, the meat puppets...etc were all grunge.
if you haven't heard most of these pj songs, then you never went to any of their bootleg pages, and you don't have alot of live boots they sell, cuz some of these songs are pj live classics.
Look for "yellow ledbetter" on disc 2. If you see em live, there's a decent chance you'll hear it, and its one of my favorite pj songs. "Dirty Frank" is another real good one.
its got some covers. "last kiss" is a great cover of a great old eerie rock song. Pj is famous for renditions of others' songs. I saw em tag floyd's classic "brick in the wall" on the end of daughter awhile back. Anywhoo, obtain this album, along with their studio releases. They try to collect as many live boots as you can. each one will have a different daughter tag, (some repeat) but then you can have pj for weeks.
