Free Music Notes for Lost Dogs

Free Music Review: A bonus for those who have collected the singles
Hit: 5 Stars

Of course I was going to buy this colection. While I had a good bit of the songs on Lost Dogs, there were more than enough that I didn't have to warrant buying it. But when listening to the songs, I noticed that most of the songs (Yellow Ledbetter being one exception) appear here as either remixes, rerecordings, or alternate takes. They don't mention anything about it in the liner notes, but anyone who has heard the original versions of Dirty Frank, Wash, Alone, Down, and others will hear differences to the songs. Wash has the harmonica absent on the Jeremy single. Dirty Frank is without the Chili Peppers bit and only one Shaft bit. Alone has slightly different lyrics. Others have subtle changes (louder guitar, etc). But these are different enough that it is a nice suprise for those of us who have most of the songs already.

As for the ones that I hadn't heard, there are some real gems on this album. Sad is fantastic. Brother is a quality instrumental. Fatal is another that could have easily been on any album.

For Pearl Jam fan out there, this is a must have.

Free Music Review: The best rarieties/b sides album i've heard
Hit: 5 Stars

There have been many albums that have lost tracks from bands, the songs that were left off just feel empty and you thank God that they were left off the album. (Nirvana - Incesticide)
and then we have our classic rock albums of b sides, singles, and rarities (beatles - Past masters 1 and 2, the who - odds and sods).
I bought Pearl Jam's new Lost Dogs album the day it came out and what struck me was that while listening to the first disc I had never skipped a song, and I hate everyone who says that Pearl Jam died in the 90s and that grunge music is dead. Pearl Jam isn't "Grunge," they were never Grunge music to begin with, they were a power rock band, just like the who were in the 70s and Led Zeppelin were in the 60s, grunge is more punk/pop/metal influenced and Nirvana was grunge,as well as sonic youth(very underrated by the way). The only other albums that made me this happy that i purchased this year were the Red Hot chili peppers reissue albums but those weren't even made this year, I wish bands like these got more recognition for their work!

Free Music Review: A Great Double Disc
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been a fan of Pearl Jam's since Ten and will probably keep buying what they put out--even though the band's style has changed somewhat. Lost Dogs is a great double disc set, and what makes it work is that each disc has it's own "feel." There seems to be some thought put into arranging the songs (although I think Yellow Ledbetter should have been on the second disc).

The first disc is a little louder and more up-tempo. Best songs are All Night, Alone, Education, You, Leavin' Here, Gremmie Out of Control and Yellow Ledbetter. Some of these I heard before as B-sides to singles, others I didn't know about. The second disc is the better of the two and has songs that are a little slower and laid back. Best ones are Fatal, Other Side, Hard to Imagine, Footsteps, Drifting and Last Kiss.

There are some filler songs on the discs and you can hear why some songs didn't make it. Still, Lost Dogs helped me realize why I liked Pearl Jam so much in the first place and gives the listener a good snapshot of band's work.

Free Music Review: A Treasure Chest
Hit: 5 Stars

"Lost Dogs" is a miracle of maturity, honesty and soul. The second disc alone is worth the price of the entire album. Songs that real do not come around often, and it is even rarer to get them from rock stars as huge as these guys. Listening to tracks such as "Fatal" and "Other Side" is like chewing night in your mouth. Layered with a kind of Cure-meets-Mazzy Star atmosphere, the bitter and hypnotizing melancholy of disc 2 is the work of a band whose imagination extends well beyond the borders of "grunge." This is not just a grunge band; this is a great band, and stunning performances like "Dead Man," the folkish "Drifting Away" or the ethereal "Footsteps" make that crystal clear. Pearl Jam is the last iconic band of the grunge era to still be putting out music as potent as it was 13 years ago, and it is no minor blessing that they have managed to keep it up when so many others have either met tragic ends, moved on, or simply lost their muse.

Free Music Review: Best B-Side album in Rock History, hands down
Hit: 5 Stars

It's almost baffling that this is a B-Side album. Songs that didn't fit on their studio albums, or songs that the band didn't like very much. Well, if you piece together 10-12 of these "B-Side" songs carefully, you could probably construct Pearl Jam's best album to date.

I didn't like the fact that they redid the vocals for some of the songs... personally, I liked the originals of "Driftin", "U", "Wash", and "Alone" much better. However, they're still good with the 2003 vocals dubbed over.

My personal favorite songs on the cd are, "Sad" (which amazingly was left off Binaural), "Hold On", "Otherside", "Down", "Fatal", and of course, the oldies but goodies "Footsteps", "Dirty Frank" (which was slightly altered), and "Yellow Ledbetter".

A must have for any Pearl Jam fan. You just won't find any B-Side album in Rock N' Roll history as good as this one. It's truly remarkable.
