Free Music Review: grab it like it's hot
Hit: 5 Stars

Grunge is not dead. Pearl Jam has outdone themselves again! "rearviewmirror" from Pearl Jam tops the list when it comes to greatest hit colections. Normally when you think of greatest hits you think of all the radio hits you can't stand to even hear one more time, but Pearl Jam has remixed some familiar tracks and reintroduced some tracks unknown to many, but much loved by die hard Pj fans. I was anxiously awaiting this release, hoping to not be disappointed, and not only was I not disappointed, but i haven't taken this cd out of my stereo yet. It covers all of the radio hits for a generic audience, but also manages to seduce already smitten fans with new remixes of songs like "Black" and "Alive." One thing I enjoyed with the experience of relearning Pearl Jam was the fact the disc one is more hardcore, for times when i need a litte pump, and disc two slows down the tempo with more mellow tracks. That's great for a girl like me who may have more moods than hours in a day. Fortunately for me, Eddie Vedder and crew can always make me feel better. Listening to a complex album like "rearviewmirrow" somehow sets me adrift and makes makes me feel that my life is not so complex. The best part of all- you can take this trip for less than a 20.00

Free Music Review: There Will Be Complaints But It's Wall To Wall Gold...
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the highly anticipated `Greatest Hits' package from the longest surviving and arguably best group of the famed, early 90's `Seattle Grunge Triangle' - completed by Nirvana and Soundgarden. With eight studio albums and a seemingly endless amount of live recordings and bootlegs, cutting it down to a double disc collection must have been the hardest job since Michael Jackson's publicist. Whether or not everything you like appears, they are certainly the most approachable 33 tracks. They're all here; the three massive singles from `Ten', the screeching `Do The Evolution', the gorgeously constructed `Daughter', the haunting yet radio friendly `Better Man' and `Last Kiss', right up to the self assured brilliance of `I Am Mine' off their last album. Does it get much better than this? Well the PJ purists will no doubt argue for whatever they see as the biggest injustices - but it is interesting to note, that from the album `No Code' - commonly regarded as the bands most diverse and satisfying start-to-finish release, only three tracks made the cut. But alas I'm trying to pick-a-part perfection. The only better way to enjoy Pearl Jam is with an 8-CD box set, but this is more than enough for now.

Free Music Review: Greatest band of the past 20 years
Hit: 5 Stars

"Jeremy" got me hooked, Eddie's voice kept me interested, and solid album after album put them in the history books.

Looking back over the years and all of the albums Pearl Jam has put out, you'll see each album was completely different in every way from the next. I've never seen a band offer so many different sounds. Sure, there's no denying Eddie lost his voice around the "No Code" album, and it got progressively worse over the years. Even with their front man being a shadow vocally of what he once was, they still made some amazing music.

Nirvana may have opened the flood gates for Grunge/Alternative music, but Pearl Jam is the band that put Seattle on the map, as far as I see it.

Most Pearl Jam fans have every song in this collection, but those of you who read this who gave up on Pearl Jam after the "Vitalogy" album (like most people did), then you're in for a treat. The combination of Eddie's declining vocal power, the ticketmaster thing, and Pearl Jam refusing to make videos anymore kind of shut them off from being mainstream any longer. It's all as well though... they still made some classic music over those years, and aren't done yet.

Free Music Review: Well Conceived Design, Great Sound Quality, Great Compilation!
Hit: 5 Stars

This 2-Disc best of compilation of the great band comes wonderfully packaged in gatefold cardboard sleeve which unfolds into 3 square pieces. It also contains a 16-page booklet that contains pictures of the band as well as the credits page. The tracks are also thoughtfully arranged so that all the harder, faster paced tracks are on the "Up" side (Disc One)and the slower paced ones are on the "Down" side (Disc Two). Most importantly though, the sound quality is very, very good due in no small part to the great remixing done by Brendan O'Brien on "Once" and "Alive". Let's hope they do a similar job on "Ten" and "Vs" and rerelease them in mini-lp sleeve replica designs too! I've always thought that the sound quality on these two and especially on "Ten" was not as good as it could be. Great track selections, great sound quality, great album design and packaging all make this the best (and currently the only) compilation album of Pearl Jam that's out there. Great for those of you who want to sample or learn more about the band but don't want to get all the albums. Recommended.

Free Music Review: Greatest Hits
Hit: 5 Stars

Somehow I slept through the grunge rock movement in the 90s and missed this. I vaguely remember hearing PJ back then wondering how people could listen to this and call it music. Years later, I was exposed to the alternative rock music genre and "got it."

If you missed the boat, this is a great way to get into PJ's music and get a sampling of their hits from different albums. Some of these hits are lovely acoustic songs or blistering electric songs you can really rock to. To improve things, you get some remastered hits and get a much better listening experience than you would ever get from the original recordings.

If I really could get what I wanted, I would want a remastered PJ "Ten" album, which I think is the best PJ album. Until then this may be the best I can get. But this collection of the faster Up Side hits and slower ballad Down Side gives me a nice way to learn about the PJ albums I missed.

This collection fits together well with Nirvana, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, and Bush grunge hits.
