Free Music Notes for Ten (Deluxe Edition) (2CD/1 DVD)Free Music Review: 10.......the album that put PJ on the map Hit: 5 Stars
This is one of the best records made in the last 20 years easily. Rock had gotten very watered down with the entire "hair metal band" thing that was very big and then Seattle just exploded with the grunge movement. The funny thing is Pearl Jam isn't grunge but they got lumped in with it. They are more just straight rock/blues. They are great at what they do.
Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Sonic Youth and Pearl Jam were pretty much the biggest bands up there at the time. Pearl Jam is really the only band that lasted (sonic youth is good but.....they aren't PJ.)
This album was a huge influence on me when I was in high school and I listen to it today but when I heard they re-mastered it and released the MTV Unplugged with it I had to get this album again.
The original is unchanged and still as beautiful as ever as you can hear a lot of the imperfections of their playing as it was so raw back then. Now that they have been playing for so many years they have gotten their catalog of music down to a science which is good but mistakes in playing and playing through them are what makes bands great to me.
The re-mastered version is slightly different in that a lot more of the instruments feel like they are up front more. You can still hear Eddie sing and he isn't drowned out by any means but I prefer the original. I understand that Brendan O'Brien didn't want to mess with this classic but the guys had a lot of faith in him to remix it differently. It isn't bad but I have always been the guy that says don't mess with perfection.
If you like PJ you have to get this album, if you like music and don't own Ten you need to be slapped then you need to go buy this version as it has the both versions on it. Nuff said.......

Free Music Review: Redone, and better than ever! Hit: 5 Stars
I am a huge Pearl Jam fan, and Ten is by far my favorite album. I will let you know that I will continue to play the same disc that my dad bought in 1991 until the thing disintegrates. That being said...
the Redux version of Ten is awesome. For the diehard fans: fear not, none of the soul of the original is lost with this album. I know some people think that remixing or fixing an album after its original release is sacrilege, but I don't subscribe to that belief. What Brendan O'Brien did was not create a new album, not even close. He sharpened up the sound, brought out more of Eddie on the songs, and made all the tracks come at you with a louder bang than ever before. I love the redux version, and I still have to listen to it another 100 or so times to come even with my listens to the original. If you're a true PJ fan, you should be getting this anyway, but even if you're only a casual fan (or new altogether), I think this version is well worth the investment, as it brings the same vibe from the 1991 songs to a newer, updated, fresher platform in the Redux version.
As for the DVD, yeah, it only has a few songs and doesn't provide the entire show, but let's be honest: they picked some great songs, the picture quality is pretty good, and the audio is very good. I think of it as a bonus, as it only adds to the entire package. If you don't think it's worth the extra money to get the DVD with 7 songs, then just get the Collector's Edition with the 2 cd's. however, I think it's worth the extra few bucks, as nothing beats Pearl Jam live.
Free Music Review: An Eye Opener Hit: 5 Stars
What can be said about the most influential album in Rock history without stepping on someone else's feet? I could go into tangent rants about how over a 20 year time span Eddie Vedder and co. pulled me from a pool of despair, but this is not about me, so I'll try and leave me out.
This album was an introduction of many things to me. I was basically into Pop music prior to Ten, with an occasional trek into Heavy Metal. Looking back at that, I found that although Pop and Metal were good, everything seemed so fake. Ten came off to me like reading a newspaper. Every song seemed to come straight from headlines, Jeremy was a testament to that.
Another thing this album introduced to me was the "Two Headed Monster" that is Stone Gossard and Mike McCready. They really play off each other so well. I never really looked at the idea of Right Guitar/ Left Guitar as it's presented in Alternative music. I thought Hetfield/ Hammett or Slash/ Stradlin were tough, but Stone and Mike have them beat hands down. Jeff Ament rounds it out with his remarkable bass compositions.
The only thing that throws me off is who I should give drumming credit to. There have been so many of them, but that has never been a problem, because they have always been phenomenal.
This collection will always be a favorite of mine, because of the inclusion of the superb demos for "State of Love and Trust" and "Breath", two faves of mine also. I still can't believe it's been 20 years, but what a good 20 it has been.
Free Music Review: Great Remix CD worth the price, but even better remaster!! Hit: 5 Stars
The remix CD is the main reason why I purchased this re-release. This is not a radical remixing - I would say it's 90% the same as the original. But it's really cool hearing a fresh take on a classic CD. Overall, there is less reverb so everything seems a little clearer, more up-front and just overall more "modern" sounding (in a good way). There are certain nuances that you hear that were buried in the previous mix and other things that are no longer as noticable. If you are like me, some parts you will like better than the original and others not as much; but it's a great concept that was pulled off very well. Some things are more drastic changes, such as the vocals on Oceans are very dry (without the highly-processed flange effect from the original). I still think I like the original mix better but the remix is worth buying for fans of the album who want to hear a new twist on it.
However... the original re-mix remastered is even better! Unlike many recent remastered reissues that just add a limiter to make the CD "louder" while sucking out the dynamics, this one is done by mastering legend Bob Ludwig and is incredible!! The sound is a lot clearer and up-front and seems to have even more dynamics than the original. This is not why I bought the re-issue but this is the main reason I'm glad I did!!
Free Music Review: Great Re-issue...Get this if you are a fan of Ten Hit: 5 Stars
I was totally blown away with the redux CD of Ten. Ed's lead vocals have been brought up in the mix. That echo you hear in Ed's vocals are no longer in any of the songs. At first I was a little disappointed to not hear that. It grew on me. It is nice to hear this album like never before. Put on a nice pair of headphones, crank them and you will feel like the band is playing wherever you are The remastered original mix does sounds nice. Get this set in CD or Vinyl if you are new or a hardcore fan. I know this will please the hardcore fans. Sorry no casette re-issue of this album lol. That format is dead. This actually brings me to my next thing. Someone once told me that the orginal master tapes for Ten were not mastered for a CD release. This may explain why the CD's do not have a full sound to them. Don't get me wrong I enjoy the original release of Ten.
Before this re-issue came out I talked to some people online. They said oh this re-issue is a gimmick by the record company to milk more money out of the fans. That statement is complete BS. This is a really good re-issue of Ten.
I would review the DVD, but did not get that set. Bottom line is get this re-issue if you enjoy Ten. You cannot go wrong with this album.
