Free Music Review: One of the greats from the "grunge" era....
Hit: 5 Stars

I am really not a fan of Vedder these days after seeing him on VH1 Storytellers the other day...I think to an extent, one's political views can cloud the capabilities of musicians to the point where they become completely BORING. Singing a poorly written song by Tim Robbins is lowering yourself in my book....

Anyway, back to This great album. I remembered it from my college days and just had to get it. I've always loved Jeremy, even though some think it was overplayed back then. Black is one of those songs I can listen to over and over again. All the others are great songs as well. Just a great album. Too bad Pearl Jam will never repeat it...then again it's probably better that way.

Free Music Review: Why all the criticism?
Hit: 5 Stars

NOTE: I am actually 16, I just never found time to have my own username.

First of all, I am not a Pearl Jam fan, as this is the only album I own by them. But I have been listening to it alot lately, so I thought I would gove my comments. I've looked at the reviews, and it seems as though it recieved a lot of negative comments, so I'm gonna step in and explain why this rules.

People tend to diss Eddie Vedder, but I like his voice, it's way better than Kurt Cobain's voice. Stone Gossard is a really good guitarist, and his solos, while not up to Slayer standards, are very good in their own right. Then we have Mike McCready, who is a good rhythm guitarist, and he sometimes solos with Stone, and does a good job. Even though the guitars are downtuned somewhat, Jeff Ament's bass lines are audible and very good for this type of music. Finally, Dave Krusen provides a suitable rhythm behind the kit, and it works very well.

We know the hits "Alive", "Even Flow", and "Jeremy" from the early 90s, all of which are great songs. But the ballads, like "Release", "Black", "Garden", and "Oceans", are great. Let's not forget the rockin' songs "Deep", "Once", "Why Go", and "Porch". The album has a feel that works great because of the mix of ballads and rockers, and it captivates the listener, as they don't know what to expect next (unless they own this album and have heard it a million times).

Like Squash 'N' Squeak below me said, you can hear traces of tons of classic rock acts from the 70s, but Eddie and co. don't rip them off at all. In the end, if you don't have this album, and are a rock lover, I highly recommend adding this to your collection. It is one killer debut.

PS, when it comes to grunge albums, this destroys Nirvana's "Nevermind".

Free Music Review: Forget the grunge image and get over the hype...
Hit: 5 Stars

Let me just say that for all the anti-mainstream attitude and alternative music hype of the nineties it is amazing how much the mainstream grunge attitude affected people's opinion of what is and what isn't good music - based merely on image and attitude - something that, ironically, was supposed to not matter...

That said, Pearly Jam's debut was an amazing musical achievement which even today stands apart from most band's current releases. LISTEN TO THE DAMN MUSIC!!! I was and still am a huge Nirvana fan, but who cares if Kurt Cobain had a negative opinion of Eddie Vedder or whatever...Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament had been in 'grunge' bands since the the mid-80's (Green RIver, Mother Love Bone, Temple of the Dog) and by the time Pearl Jam formed the guys had fine-tuned their musical abilities and were ready to create a masterpiece in ROCK MUSIC!!!

Yes, that is right - ROCK MUSIC! This album has some of the best guitar rhythms and epic solos ever written! Although 'Alive' was definitely overplayed on the radio (and probably still is - I don't listen to the radio so I don't know) the last 2 minutes of the song is one of the best guitar solos ever! Fans of bands such as Led Zeppelin, Derek and the Dominos, or Deep Purple should rejoice over this kind of music. Ever wonder why so many people copied Eddie Vedder's singing style? - because his vocals are truly unmatched, full of angst and diversity. I love the long yells, fluctuations, and the way he utilizes his voice to express the emotion of each song - beautifully executed and probably one of the best vocal performances of any rock album.

The grooves of 'Even Flow', the moving 'Black', and the lesser known epics such as 'Release' are easily some of the most unique and moving musical compositions, not just of the nineties era, but ever! That is quite a lofty claim, but I seriously cannot ever get sick of this album - and I was one of the nineties kid's with attitude who hated Pearl Jam at first, but I quickly became a fan of the music instead of the hype.

'Ten' is an essential to any music collection...timeless...a true masterpiece.

RECOMMENDATION: If you are looking for some of the best nineties rock then Alice in Chains 'Facelift' and 'Dirt' are also essential to your music collection. Alice in Chains were another band that was labeled 'grunge' by the media despite creating truly unique and awesome rock music.

Free Music Review: Timeless
Hit: 5 Stars

Probably one of the top 20 rock albums of the past 20 years, I still consider this to be Pearl Jam's best album to date. Possibly even Pearl Jam's career defining album, which is unusual for a band to be at the absolute peak of their game on releasing their debut.

Penned and sung by Eddie Vedder, without a doubt one of rocks great vocalists, this album has a fair few of PJ's best-loved tracks.

If you're relatively new to Pearl Jam's music, I would recommend you buy either this release or their greatest hits album, 'rearviewmirror: Greatest hits 1991-2003'.

Fan favourites on this album are "Jeremy", "Alive", Even Flow" and "Black".
Some tracks I rate highly would be "Alive", "Garden", "Jeremy" and "Release".

Still, if you don't fancy buying the album, at least download some of the tracks I mentioned. You won't be dissapointed.

If you're a fan of Pearl Jam you might also like The Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Audioslave, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots or even Nirvana. If you like this record I would highly recommend listening to 'Siamese Dream' by The Smashing Pumpkins, or 'Superunknown' by Soundgarden, which is apparently one of Eddie Vedder's favourite albums.

Free Music Review: 90's classic, nuff said.
Hit: 5 Stars

What else can I say. The most deep of the big four of grunge, they really stood apart from their peers. Eddie Vedder is a great singer, who has tons of depth that some people can't reconize. I am glad that the band decided to stick together, because it's refreshing to see that a band like this is still putting a stop to lame psuedo-grunge bands like Creed and Nickellame. Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, and Nirvana can't touch this.
