Free Music Review: Plebs
Hit: 3 Stars

For me, the stand-out track is "Look and You Will Find" by John Wooley & Just Born. It's a moody, funky number with an evil-sounding piano, which sounds like smashing glass, and a minor-key chorus. The other John Wooley track, "You're Lying", is decent, but it sounds like a b-side variation of "Look and You Will Find", which dominates it in the same way that the German army managed to dominate the approaches to Antwerp, even as the Third Reich collapsed around them.

As a whole the album is the typical mixed bag, although it doesn't have a classic to match "Action Woman" or "She's Not Just Anybody". The highs are fairly modest. The first track, "Moanin'" by The Bunnies, is fab, a mixture of corny organs and a twangy guitar that gets shredded towards the end of the song. Noel Deschamp's French-language version of "I'm Your Witchdoctor" has a weak production, but it rocks nonetheless. The Klan get an award for the most unsound band name on the album. Their song, "Already Mine", sounds like a jolly Paul McCartney number, such as "All Together Now", although it is mixed with Turkish dancing music, and the lead singer puts on a Cockney accent. It's not very good, but jolly. "I Can't Tell" by the Shake Spears and "Baby Back Now" by The Scorpions (surely not the actual The Scorpions?) are both rolling organ-led grooves that pass the time. "I've Been Wrong" by the Honestmen reminds me a bit of "Feathered Fish" by Sons of Adam, in the sense that it has a good riff but naff vocals. "The Place Where She Lives" by Four Rockets has a similar riff during the slow bits, but is otherwise a dull song that is overlong at 2:40.

"Midnight Train" by the Shamrocks and "I'm Cryin'" by the Odd Persons are both minimalist grooves. The Shamrocks' tune is the tougher of the two. "Not For Me" by the Shirrows is awful, the lead singer is tuneless and it plods along. "Hide If You Want To Hide" by the Cedars has a chorus that sounds exactly like a 1980s New Wave pop song - it's uncanny, it could have been by Depeche Mode or A Flock of Seagulls- although the verses have a Middle Eastern feel (the band was from the Lebanon). It's an odd mix that works. "Connais-Tu etc" by Evariste is a French-language novelty track. I'm not fond of French-language novelty tracks.

"Las Ovejitas" by Los Salvages does the quiet-loud thing years before grunge. It's really catchy power-pop, although I can't understand any of the lyrics. It's from Spain. Whoever would have guessed that Spain would have pop music? "Daddy" by the Tonics is prototype heavy blues-rock. I can understand the lyrics, although I wish they had sung it in their native German, because that would have disguised how awful the lyrics are. "Dis-Nous Dylan" is another French-language novelty track, of which I am not fond.

"Bald Headed Woman" is from the land of Crowded House. It starts off as a trudging slow sub-blues number and the does the slow-fast thing, years before grunge. The lead singer gives it a go, but it's not as clever as "Las Ovejitas" because the slow bits outnumber the fast bits. Bad mistake. It has a good dirty guitar groan effect. "She had a Name to Find Out" by Nicols does the quiet-loud thing years before etc, and throws in some Joy Division drumming. It works because the fast bits are fast and plentiful, and the slow bits are dramatic. There's a church organ, it's quite spooky.

"Searching" by the Entertainers is too jolly. "Too Much Monkey Business" by the Satins is one of those walking-bass skiffle-style twelve-bar numbers. The album has too many songs like that. The very next song, "Brothers Grimm", is much the same.

Like the rest of the Pebbles albums, the package tells you almost nothing about the bands, and looks to have been compiled on a budget of twelve pence at the most.
