Free Music Notes for Peeping TomFree Music Review: Fantastic Hit: 5 Stars
I didn't really know what to think about this release. I was certainly anticipating it, as I do with any upcoming Patton release. Faith No More and Mr. Bungle rank among my favorite bands, so I always look forward to hearing more music from the demented genius behind the two innovative acts. I have heard nearly all of his releases, including all of the Faith No More albums, all of the Bungle releases, some of his guest work with Bjork on "Medulla", the track he did on the Handsome Boy Modelling School disc "White People", both Tomahawk albums, most of the Lovage album, and his work with the X-cutioners. Two things I look for in Patton releases are his unreal vocal performances (which is basically a given), and creativity/ innovation. So when I first heard the single "Mojo", I was a tad apprehensive about its commercial sound even though I loved the track. Peeping Tom was being hailed as his "pop" record, after all, and I wasn't quite sure what to make of this claim. On top of this, I had really struggled to get into the X-Cutioners album, and was thus slightly wary of being able to enjoy this next release. I shelled out 15 dollars on the day of the discs release, and I was absolutely ecstatic. This is the closest work he's done to Faith no More since Tomahawk's self titled debut. The songs are all great, and Patton delivers a top-notch vocal performance (as always). It manages to be both bizarre yet strangely accessible, which may be why it is being hailed as a "pop record". Probably none of these songs will ever receive airplay, but they won't send your sane friends screeching out of your car if you play it for them in the same manner that say, "Suspended Animation" would. Collaborators include Massive Attack, Kool Keith, Norah Jones, Dan the Automator, Kid Koala, and others. Absolutely essential listening for 2006.
Free Music Review: Mike Patton does quality porn music? Hit: 5 Stars
Am trying to work out how to describe this record but I can't think of anything better than a genre based around how the soundtrack would be on a quality porn movie, not that I'd know, but it's sort of like a very slick, sexy grindy sound which is really seductive. Might sound silly but what he has acheived is a loungey sort of feel, with a very sexy sort of sound - lots of huge bass and beat noises and so on. Definitely not the sort of thing radio will flock to, but not a revisiting of the rock or heavier stuff he's done with FNM or Tomahawk etc...
What I like about it is he is making a lot of experimental sounds (and he does a lot of the music himself - proving his musical talent aside from being a majestic vocalist) but at the same time making enjpoyable well balanced songs. Which is fairly rare to really push a boundary but not overstep it in parts - ala Mr. Bungle.
A lot of great music on it - 'Mojo' for me really shines as it's accessible - a little bit like a couple of the FNM songs, but only structurally and is blessed with Mike at his vocal best, is powerful and well done. It's probably the best example of the record but there is a lot of stuff good also. It's also not song after song of the same stuff - he's all over the place with sound but it holds together really well from track to track.
Similar to an underground record a few years back which Sigue Sigue Sputnik boss Tony James was promoting and played on called 'Fin de Seicle' which wasn't as heavy as Peeping Tom but had a really sexy feel to it.
Terrific listen
Free Music Review: Patton's the man! Hit: 5 Stars
This album is supposed to be Patton's version of pop & what he feels should be on the radio. Well compared to the stuff you hear on the radio, this material wouldn't even come close. I would be surprised to hear any of these tracks on the radio any where in the states except for maybe some college radio stations.
If I attempted to play this to my radioslave friends thinking that they would be able to enjoy it or have the attention span for it because it Patton's most accesible work since Faith No More, I would be sadly mistaken. It's more accessible than the most of his recent projects, but doesn't even come close to FnM's accessibility. FnM is a whole different animal.
Mr. Bungle's first album actually is more accessible to me than Peeping Tom as a whole. So let's not kid ourselves...no, even better, lets stop insulting this music by calling it "pop."
The Peeping Tom album is a great album that only shows few signs of accessibility from time to time & THAT'S A GOOD THING! The music on this entire album is very original. There's nothing out there that sounds like it & I'm so glad there's still a few artists out there like Patton.
The music industry should promote & recognize artists for their originality & having talent above & beyond the average musician.
In this day in age, they don't. The back up puppets who can push merchandise, can do a decent dance choreography, & image than the music itself. Patton represents the complete counter culture to that & good for him.
This cd is worth every penny.
Free Music Review: Best album so far this year Hit: 5 Stars
There is no doubt that this record is the best thing I have heard all year..maybe even last year as well..
It opens up with the pretty yet wacky/insane five seconds..perfect way to begin this by making me want to riot and have some sex at the same time. Mojo is of course incredibly cool and catchy single (b-side available on itunes), DOn't even Trip has some of my favorite lyrics and Getaway has Kool keith waht else do you need? Neighborhood Spaceman has one of the catchiest melodies and coolest breakdowns that I've ever heard in my life..the song simply owns your face.. Kill the DJ is another really rockin tune with and old school hip hop feel somehow thrown in..now Caipirihinia is a little confusing.. but ehh, Celeberity Deathmatch is an amazing song with amazing words..Now someone on here seemed to think How U feelin was a waste..that confuses me as it is easily my favorite tune on this disc, that song simply has soul! I'm talking like old school Stevie WOnder soul!! SUcker is great and hot too..and the last track is one of the most amazing songs about our current situation ever..try and get that one out of your head..
Buy this record...it is unique in that familiar way, amazing vocals, lyrics, and raps.. Of course the packaging is cool too..lyrics would be nice but ehh I'm not knocking a star off for that..
Free Music Review: better than expected Hit: 5 Stars
i bought this cd expecting retrovertigo and pink cigarette type pop songs from mr bungles california cd.. instead what i got was a bunch of beat oriented pop songs like you would hear on mtv (think justin timberlake) mixed with a bit of hip hop/electronic (think beck) . although there are still traces of pattons craziness that make this cd unique. and this cd is catchy as hell and doesn't get old. i can put the cd in, put it on shuffle, and listen for hours. what i really liked about this cd though was the beats and contributions by the guests artists. this cd introduced me to quite a few beat makers that i enjoy and has caused me to branch out into a whole area of music i haven't really listened to much before (underground electronic, beats, etc.) patton fans may be disappointed if they expect mr bungle or fantomas, but if you learn anything from patton it's to expect the unexpected and this cd doesn't disappoint, plus it's a lot more accessable to the average music listener than other patton projects. is it pattons best and most unique work? no , is the 5 star ranking i gave it mean its one of the best cds ever? no, but it's better than almost anything else out there today and a good listen. 4.5 stars i'll give it and i'm looking forward to future releases to see who he collaborates with next.
