Free Music Notes for Peeping TomFree Music Review: Conceptually brilliant Hit: 5 Stars
Unlike some other reviewers of this album, I am not a lifelong Mike Patton fan. While admittedly this gives me less of time-tested Patton background, I do believe it gives me a more neutral outlook.
That being said, if listeners listen to this album with its concept in mind, one can't help but notice its genius. It is a sort of satire of AND reaction to AND adaptation of pop music, carried out in a way that contains plenty of musical depth.
It is inappropriate to compare it to works of Mr. Bungle or Faith No More because if you'll notice, neither one of those band names appears on the cover of this CD.
The album tumultuously twists and dives through countless aural aesthetics, taking on a massively epic sound with the genius "Don't Even Trip" thanks to the inarguably brilliant mind of Amon Tobin. Melodically, the song is one of the strongest I've ever heard from Patton. It takes a look at pop sensibilities, and simultaneously embraces and mocks them.
I thoroughly recommend this album.
P.S. - hearing Norah Jones whisper bitter, evil-sounding lyrics is a sultry and sensuous experience that will knock many a person of their feet.
Free Music Review: A Love Letter From Mike P. Hit: 5 Stars
This friggin' album rules. Since, of course, Patton is the man and can't write a bad track, contrary to what some may say, I should've known. However, if we assume things, we make an ass out of.. well you get the idea. Nice to hear Patton going at it instrumentally; it's such a rare thing. Can't wait for the tour, this thing is going to explode live. AND BY THE WAY, This album can be on radio if we stop being selfish and request it at our local radio stations. Does it matter if you listen to the radio? NO! It's not for you, it's for Mr. P. You know the guy who slaved in a kitchen to cook you up a nice helping of aural delicacies. I know what you want to say,"What if it makes him too big? I don't want a bunch of jerks at the show." Those people might buy the album, true, but don't worry. They may try to get some of his other work and be too scared to see him live OR it may help some kid who desperately needs something to help him get his act together, do what he needs to do, and realize that there are others out there like him, who are lovers of true music, not haters. Get this album, you won't regret it, unless you are a hammysink. What the Hell is a hammysink?
Free Music Review: This Beat Could Win Him a Grammy Hit: 5 Stars
Probably NOT. There is little justice in the music world. This is almost a straight through album, but there is one song that is a skipper and it is Kill The DJ. It is still pretty early on in my Peeping Tom listening so who knows, maybe I'll grow to like that one. That being said, let's start from the ground up: Kill the DJ = worst song on cd. Next up is Caipirinha, not the strongest song, but in the context of the rest of the cd it is not a skipper. However, I don't hear myself ever saying "I'm in the mood to hear 'Caipirinha,' anyone else?." The whole rest of the album is pretty awesome!! MY favorite being Your Neighborhood Spaceman - it reminds me of something that could have come off of "California." If your wondering what I'm doing almost quoting Tomahawk with the "grammy" title I used, it's actually inspired by Celebrity Death Match. he says "if I keep doin' it my way and you keep doin it your way..." and it is totally reminiscent of that Tomahawk song. I give the music four stars. that extra star is because the packaging is ultra-creative. You gotta see it for yourself!
Free Music Review: Surprisingly good..very good indeed Hit: 5 Stars
First off I havent listened to anything Patton has done recently with much consistency. I dig General Patton Vs. The X-Ecutioners , hell his avant stuff with fantomas and tomahawk are both good, but mostly Faith No More is what I know of him. I'd heard about this project for some time, and read that this (peeping tom), is what he invisions pop music as. Or how it should be. I have to agree, most pop is rubbish, especially the kind that isnt written by the atists.
Utimately, this record has it all. He shows once again how versatile he is. Its very chill music, relaxing enough for any mood, yet has spunk enough to motivate you. Seriously its worth a listen, when you have a pioneer like Patton you know you're getting passion, a true artist. I dont care about the production help or cameos, since this is basically experimental it turned out to be a real gem that I enjoyed.
Free Music Review: Very good and very different. Hit: 5 Stars
This album is unlike anything else that you will hear. Some may call this pop, however I am mystified by that misnomer. If pop is simply determined by beat than I guess this album might be 'popish'. If you appreciate different music that is genuinely creative and you like electronic beats I believe that you will like this album. If you are a long time Patton fan and are wishing for Faith No More or Bungle than this will not fit that bill. However, if you are a long time Patton fan my guess is that you will not be expecting this to be a rehash of his other projects.
This album should be one of the best of the year (for those who appreciate artists who could care less about pop culture or political correctness).
