Free Music Notes for Perpetual Motion

Free Music Review: Amazing and beautiful
Hit: 5 Stars

Fleck's 2001 disc `Perpetual Motion' is by far his most ambitious foray into virtuosity, performing classical works by Bach, Scarlatti and Chopin.

And he does it without really showing off. He only tackles mazurkas, fugues and Bach classical inventions on the five-string banjo, a simple instrument for which this music was never conceived.

I once flirted with playing the banjo, and it wasn't an easy task, even trying to play 'Uncle Pen'.

But the man must be possessed to play it like Bela does. Alternating between delicate and complicated, slow to fast, Fleck gets about as much out of the humble banjo as anyone possibly could. He plays it precisely and with a light touch, with respect for the music and his instrument.

Some reviewers think it pretentious of Fleck to attempt a banjo foray into the classical genre. That's bunk. How is virtuosity measured, after all? By playing many genres: classical, bluegrass, pop, jazz, Indian, fusion. And by playing them well.

Fleck wasn't awarded a Grammy for this recording just by looking pretty. He earned it.

Free Music Review: Bluegrassical!
Hit: 5 Stars

Bela Fleck's newest CD is an ensemble of classical pieces re-worked for traditional bluegrass instruments. Bela is joined by Chris Thile-mandolinist from Nickel Creek, Edgar Meyer-bassist and pianist who colloborated previously with Bela on Strength In Numbers, as well as a number of other musicians(guitar, violin, piano, etc.- I forget their names forgive me). Fleck and friends intrepret the work of famous composers - Chopin, Bach, Debussy, Beethoven and etc.- marvelously. The tough part for these fine musicians in this case was to re-work the music for their own instruments. This proved daunting for them considering the music was not written with these instruments in mind. They proved up to the challenge and the result is this wonderful classical album. The concept of playing classical music using traditionally bluegrass instruments proves to be a great idea. I think it sounds wonderful to hear such beautiful pieces of music played with these instruments. It is highly recommended for those who liked Strength In Numbers or any kind of classical music in general.

Free Music Review: Masterpiece....
Hit: 5 Stars

What else can you say - Bela fleck is a natural phenomenon and has created one of the most bewilderingly impressive feats on a banjo you will ever hear. The album is simply a masterpiece. I watched this live many years ago and was amazed - a life changing performance. Who would have ever thought you could accomplish this with a banjo - Another impressive aspect of Bela Fleck is that he has somehow managed to memorize most of the masterpieces on this album, and to see it live is mind boggling. This is a once in a lifetime performance by one of the most talented musicians to ever live. It's a privilege to have been able to experience it and I highly recommend the album, especially to Bach and Beethoven fans - you will be blown away.

Free Music Review: Wonderful and historically important
Hit: 5 Stars

What Segovia did for the guitar, what Landowska did for the harpsichord, what Larry Adler did for the harmonica--that's what Bela Fleck's done for the banjo on this recording--taken an instrument that conventional wisdom said was too limited to be of much use or importance and made it do things no one dreamed possible. Fleck is not merely an astonishing musician; but he's taken the banjo a quantum leap into the future. What's next? Who knows--but I'll be waiting with great anticipation. This CD is not only wonderful to listen to, but it's important musically, as we continue to see the banjo evolve from sideshow novelty to the point where it can now take it's place in an orchestra. This recording is not only wonderful--it's important.

Free Music Review: New Era of Banjo
Hit: 5 Stars

Call me unique: I was raised on classical music, kicked into bluegrass, and started picking banjo 16+ years ago. As a follower of Bela for many years this CD, in my opinion, firmly establishes him as the all-time technical master of his instrument. Don't look for bluegrass licks here, but his impeccable timing, intonation, and mystifying speed (Moto Perpetuo is a head-shaker...and I thought Wynton Marsalis's trumpet version on "Carnival" CD was IT until I heard Bela)will make you play this over and over. His choice of pieces is wonderful, and the liner notes make fascinating reading. Bela, you've got a winner here. Thank you for some wonderful, wonderful sounds. Make another one!!
