Free Music Review: Perry Como - The most versatile Crooner of them all!
Hit: 5 Stars

One of the 20th Century's most legendary singers - Perry Como, is showcased here with a collection of mainly 'Juke Box' Hits. When all of his contemporaries fell down and out when the Rock 'N' Roll era came into fashion - Perry wasn't going to be down and out!

By the middle 1950's, Rock 'N' Roll had become the new 'thing', so crooners were somewhat disregarded. Except one very nice gentleman. Everybody's idea of a really nice guy witha beautiful voice - Perry Como!

We know that Perry didn't exactly love these tunes, but you wouldn't think for a moment that Perry didn't like 'Don't let the stars get in your eyes' if you didn't know. He sounds like he is having a ball. This all gives testimony to what a very versatile and professional singer Perry was.

This CD includes 30 Como numbers, all from the same era. All the classics are hear such as 'Kewpie Doll', 'Juke Box Baby', 'Ko ko mo (I love you so)' and 'Tomboy', plus some rarities such as 'Dancin'' (There is also a Mono 'alternate take' of 'Dancin'' on this CD - the original version is in Stereo and with a chorus and the Mono 'alternate take' is without a chorus, but the CD states otherwise!)

The sound quality is excellent on this CD and 'Bear Family Recoprds' have done a great job of remastering this CD with the sources they had.

Unfortunately, the sources used are not 1st generation master types and very likely vinyl records or possibly release masters in places. The reason for this is that 'Bear Family Records' originally released an LP called 'Juke Box Baby' by Perry Como back in 1988 and they credit one song - 'Bela Bella Sue' on the new CD as being recorded 1988, when it was recorded decades earlier. Another reason is that all the songs aren't shown in their correct sound representation - for example, some songs that are in Mono, were actually recorded in Stereo. Songs in Stereo for a rare occassion are songs such as 'Kewpie Doll'.

This is a great attempt at releasing a collection of Perry's 'Juke Box' - Rock 'N' Roll era hits, but some songs included don't come under either of these categories such as 'Angry' and 'Swingin' down the lane' - which are both from Perry's 1957 album 'We get letters' which really comes under the Jazz Genre!

This CD is basically a CD Release of the original LP from 1988, plus a great collection of bonus tracks. In total, there are 30 tracks on this CD and even though it is generally expensive to buy from many outlets - it is worth the money. However! I don't think if 'Bear Family Records' are going to charge high prices for their CD's, the sound quality should be 100% great (They should use 1st generation Master Tapes) and there should be no errors in recording dates, text, etc!

The CD also comes with a great booklet with many rare and alternate shots of popular Como photo's! The Como biography inside is far from what is desired! It includes some of the basic Como biography, then the liner notes writer decides to get clever and add some supposedly 'Unknown' facts, which I did already knew - but have been included in the wrong contexts and in a negative way towards Perry!

The discography - isn't a discography! It is basically detailed recording information on the 30 featured tracks on this CD!

One very pleasing thing to see on the back cover of the CD in the credits is 'Thanks to the late Perry Como'! It is very rare that a singer gets credit and thanks on a CD, especially now that it has been over 5 years since he passed away (May 12, 2001).

This CD gets 5 Stars straight away for Perry's unique talent. The actual CD overall has good intentions too, even though the effort could have been better - taking into consideration the high price!

Perry makes this CD 100% worth it and this is definitely a 'must' for Perry Como Fans of all ages and extents! It will also appeal to Music Fans who collect 'Rock 'N' Roll' Music - this CD covers the basis of Perry's Contribution to Rock 'N' Roll Music very well!

Thanks Mr. C!

Juke Box Baby Poster

Perry Como rocks! Como would have been aghast at the notion, but in the mid-to-late 1950s (when his TV show was the highest-rated show in the USA), he recorded a slew of singles that weren't really Rock 'n' Roll, but definitely rocked. These immaculately written, produced and sung records are now heralded as some of the era's classics, including "Kewpie Doll", "Round And Round", "Ko Ko Mo", "Tina Marie", "Hot Diggity", "Catch A Falling Star", "Magic Moments, "Juke Box Baby", "Glendora, Dancin'" and "Just Born To Be Your Baby". Those songs featured the era's top songwriters like Burt Bacharach, Leiber & Stoller and Luther Dixon and accounted for millions of records sold. Now they're joined by a selection of Como's other uptempo songs from 1945's "Hubba Hubba (Dig You Later)" to early '60s hits like "Delaware" and "Caterina". In between, there are even more classics like "Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes" (the biggest-selling record of 1953!).
