Free Music Review: rebels in a sea of clones

in a world oversatured with 'alternative' music, it's refreshing to see a band that doesn't follow what has become the corporate 'alternative rock' formula. there's no nasily faux english vocals here, it's a real accent, and russian to boot.
the songs are diverse and run a range of emotions, dynamics and subjects. the arrangements are complex without becoming overly produced prog rock, and you can walk away humming many of the hooks while actually relishing the fact that those melodies are stuck in your head.
one could spend time comparing this band to a lot of others, and in reading other people's reviews, one thing that struck me was that everyone finds this band to sound like someone entirely different - depending on their musical points of reference. bands as varied as komeda, fleetwood mac, blondie, jellyfish, the cardigens, shocking blue, the clash are among some of those named. i don't know about you, but fleetwood mac sound nothing like the clash to my ears, and i will use that as evidence to point out that persephone's bees sound like nothing else that's out there.
the lyrics are thoughtful, the production clean without going overboard (or potentially making this record sound dated 15 years from now), it's a record full of timeless songs that you can shake your booty to, sing along with, cry to, raise a rock fist to, make love to, smile along with, excercise with, dance to, and more. the band's cross over appeal has earned praise from a pool of people not yet in their teens, to people in their 70's and every one in between: hipsters, gen-xers, liberals, conservatives, punks, rockers, mods, top-40 folk, artists, laymen, white collar, blue collar workers. this is probablly part of the reason why some of these songs have been gracing tv commercials for cingular, walmart, hilton hotels, as well as appearing in indie art movie soundtracks and being played by folks such as Nic Harcourt and Rodney on the ROQ.
this band is hip and contemporary without being exclusive.
it's a damn good record, from a damn good band (the kind that seem to have become an endangered species - who write their songs and play their instruments.) if this record doesn't appear on someone's 'best of 2006' list - they either never heard it, or were paid off.
