Free Music Notes for Haymans GreenFree Music Review: Haymans Green - Pure Pop Rock Pleasure Hit: 4 Stars
I had the pleasure of seeing Pete and his band play here in Liverpool...New York that is...last Thursday night. I bought a copy of the new CD and I've given it several listens and I must say I'm pleasantly surprised. Haymans Green is not a hodge podge of disjointed tracks but a strong album with great hooks, colorful harmonies and some really well-written songs.
The CD opens with "Come With Me," full of lush harmonies and tasteful backwards guitar overdubs (a snippet of this track was used in The Best of The Beatles DVD from 2006). "Step Outside" features strong lyrics with a plodding rhythm somewhat reminiscent of "Free as a Bird" but with a better melody.
"Round and Around" features Pete's signature Mersey Beat double-stop drumming pattern. "Pete keeps the rhythm until it's time to go." Pure power pop at its "Best", indeed. "Grey River" has an English feel with nice acoustic guitars and strong harmonies. "Gone" is straight to the point, with its descending riff, catchy chorus and twin guitar solo.
Haymans Green is a bit of a time capsule of pop music from the last 40 years borrowing froma truly wide spectrum of rock and pop styles. The Pete Best Band doesn't rely on tired chord progressions, rehashing the same old formulas that usually don't sustain an entire album.
If anything, the listening experience ends too soon. The CD clocks in at just over 35 minutes. That aside, it's truly a great album that'll fit nicely amongst your rock/pop favorites. I think you'll find this effort surpasses much of the recent solo albums from the "other" drummer from The Beatles.
Free Music Review: Very good power pop release Hit: 4 Stars
I applaud the Pete Best Band for recording and releasing this very fine power pop release. Three songs on this really stand out: "Step Outside", "Dream Me Home" and the title track. These songs represent really excellent power pop songwriting and would sound so wonderful on the radio but, then again, they would probably wouldn't fit with the mediocrity that is today's FM playlists. I'm a Beatles fan from the mid-60's, been a fan of the Beatles' solo efforts in all the years since, plus I've been a major fan of power pop bands & artists that emulate the Beatles style for about 40 years so I know good songs & melodies. But while these three songs I've cited are a pleasant surprise and something we never imagined we'd hear from Pete Best, the rest of the album is really nothing that we've not heard before by other power pop artists. Nonetheless, it's always great to hear a release of melodic songs of this caliber plus it's a good thing when Beatles-influenced music gets attention instead of slipping through the cracks, as most power pop music does. The three tracks I mentioned are four-star tracks that should be heard by lovers of The Fab Four and other artists of the power pop genre. So, I give 4 stars overall, but mostly based on these tracks - the rest I would give three stars. One additional bonus to note on "Step Outside" and "Haymans Green", you'll hear some very Abbey Road/Sgt. Peppers-esque drumming! I do hope Pete & his band follow this up with an even stronger release.
Free Music Review: Great cover, surprising album Hit: 4 Stars
My girlfriend gave this to me as a valentine's present. As soon as I saw it I ran over to the rack to compare it with Beatles Anthology I. Yep, it's the very piece of photo with Pete's head that Klaus so clumsily ripped from the front cover. Ya gotta love Pete's attitude right from first glance.
Not groundbreaking (what is these days?), the recording sounds all the world like archetypal swinging england mid-60's fare, from some well reviewed corduroy garbed quartet. The songs have that easy beat, Rickenbacker ring, with a lead singer who could easily pass for another Gallagher brother.
Nothing like the Pete Best show I saw a couple of years ago. A charming though obviously derivative recreation of the Cavern show. Pete came out afterwards and was happy to talk to everyone who hung around. Perfectly lovely man.
Gotta be happy for the guy that this cd turned out so damn well. it definitely does not suffer in comparison to any recent efforts from his former mate(s). I hope it gets the publicity it deserves. (Nice to see all the reviews so far in Amazon.)
Free Music Review: ?!?!?!? THE Pete Best? Hit: 4 Stars
I happened to be reading something about The Beatles on the web and it mentioned this new album by Pete Best. It HAD to suck, so I checked it out here at Amazon.com.
HOLY CRAP! It's GREAT. I simply cannot believe that this is a work by Pete Best. Awesome. Better than Oasis' new album by a mile and certainly better than Ringo's last album by a freakin lightyear.
Those of you bummed that Ringo ain't autographing anything after October 20th, send it to Pete. He and his band deserve your kudos!
Great work!
Free Music Review: Pete Best band really is Best on new CD Hit: 4 Stars
Just listened to the CD that I purchased through Amazon..I was very impressed!! The music is jangly, guitar driven pop! Slightly reminds me of, dare I say...The Rollers when Duncan Faure was the lead singer. Original songs are really good, and I'd definitley add it to a solo Beatles collection. I'm not certain how much input Pete had on this, but I would add this to a must listen pile! Enjoy!!
