Petestrumentals ain't no different from the rest. Now Pete's 5th album, he has shown the consistency that most producers in the hip hop game today only envy. Aside from about 2 songs which feature the UN, unlike that of fellow BBE patna Jay Dee's his recent release, Welcome to Detroit, The Soul Brotha refuses to detach you from the soft, soothing feel of his music through light scratches and minimal vocal interuptions to remove from the tone of the album. For me personally, cats such as Jay Dee's Slum Village can produce with the best of them, but often times the accompaning emcees on the tracks are sub-par. In the Lab, Jay can learn a thing or 2 from P Rock (You reading this Jay?). It seems like a reviewer before me, "Joe Mamma" isn't familiar with the Soul Brotha's previous work. With a formula which has worked countless times with his *intended audience*, why "stray from the pastures"? Shadow, Vadim, Honda, Krush and P Rock all have their differences. Comparing their styles to each other is unfair simply because they all bring something different to the table.

Bottomline, if you're a hip hop head who enjoys down-tempo/jazz this is a must buy. Even if you're looking for scratch laden joints with emcees a plenty I still encourage you to at least give this one some of your attention. I just can't wait for the next release from the Beat Generation collective.
