Free Music Review: One of a handful......

Pete Townshend is one of the great pioneers of rock music. He's witnessed fads come and go, genres rise and fall yet he's been pretty consistent in putting forth music that is a chip off the ol' block of things the Who. Let's face it, people regard certain groups like the Beatles, the Stones, Zeppelin as THE standards for haiving influenced rock music. However the people I know probably have the greatest regard for the Who. I have a recording of the Who from the Fillmore East in 1968, before Tommy, Who's Next et al, and it is a blazing testament to the greatness of that band.
So here is this Townshend album, a benefit show recorded in Chicago circa 1997. First I think Pete turned in an amazing show for a charitable organization he admires. I can't get over how good his guitar playing is (he has certainly got better at that with age), his voice is strong and the song selection is fantastic.
I've heard and read of how the Who just ain't firing on all the cylinders any more. It would be impossible for someone in their 60's to be able to turn in Live at Leeds like performances at that point in their lives. Fortunately for us they WERE able to do that at one time for the archives. However it should be noted that Pete Townshend is still as good, if not better guitar player today than he was then.
I think I could play this album for just about anyone with an appreciation for music and they would derive enjoyment from it. Heck there are a few songs on here that sound better than their original state. God bless ya' Pete.....I hope you're able to do what you do for a long time and enjoy it. I think I will as well.
