Free Music Review: In one word... Unbelievable!

1. Life On A Chain - 5/5 - the quiet start here is very deceiving, as about 30 seconds in the music picks up to give us more of a rock song. It is easily one of the album's best; and features some great lyrics in the vein of loneliness, etc. It's very catchy as well.

2. Strange Condition - 5/5 - this was the first PY song I ever heard. This one kind of keeps the hard-rock feel throughout; and that's perfectly fine. The lyrics are once again brilliant; and you will have no trouble wanting to sing along to them. This is (probably) my favorite song on the CD.

3. Just Another - 5/5 - unlike "Strange Condition", this one is melodic all the way through. It's really an amazing song. It was featured on the soundtrack to `Bandits', but since it wasn't really a huge hit, it's more of a hidden gem. Marvelous!

4. Black - 5/5 - this fast-starter is probably my second favorite on Musicforthemorningafter. And after I'm done listening to the CD once, I usually end up skipping back to this one. The words are similar to "Life On A Chain", but just a bit more out there and intriguing to the ear.

5. Lose You - 5/5 - most recognized for its appearance on the `Orange County' soundtrack, this slow, splendid track again highlights smart lyrics and great sounds. It's a little slower than track three, but really stands out as one of the album's best.

6. For Nancy (`Cos It Already Is) - 5/5 - the title here is really a masterpiece in itself. The unhurried (but bold) start and (soon after) heavier sound are reminiscent of track one; but the background beat here is a bit more rock-ish. Great lyrics and flawless guitar yet again.

7. Murray - 5/5 - this is actually the catchiest track on the CD. Its `uhh uh uh uh uh uh' frontline is awesome; and will keep you singing along even after the song's over. This song is incomparable to any other song here... therefore it could be considered another mystifying, hidden gem.

8. June - 4.5/5 - oh my god. Track eight: this is the FIRST song that doesn't get a five-out-of-five. Not to say it's bad or weak; but the mixing of beats and lyrics is not quite as attractive as some of the previous tracks were. Still great, though.

9. Sense - 4.5/5 - I am actually very, very close to giving this one a five-out-of-five. The only thing that's holding me back is the fact that is lacks a truly original sound. It's similar to both "Murray" and "June" when it comes to music. Otherwise it's yet another beauty.

10. Closet - 5/5 - I have really come to enjoy this track over time. And I find its harder edge to be a huge plus for the song; and for the CD. The `don't stop / don't stop / don't turn around' chorus gives you the same kind of feeling that track seven does. But after the chorus, the music/melody really picks up to give it a genuinely unique resonance. Classical!

11. On Your Side - 3.5/5 - although very comparable to "Lose You", this song is still quite good. The jingling background and soothing lyrical sound make it very likable. Yet it doesn't quite reveal itself as a definite hit.

12. Sleep Better - 4.5/5 - this is (in all likelihood) one of those songs you'll either love or overlook. The soft, tuneful chorus (`so she won't sleep better alone / and he won't sleep better alone / no they won`t feel better alone`) is easily the highlight here.

13. EZ - 5/5 - the lyrics and Yorn's usage of them are what make this song so impressive. The music here is rather one-dimensional (slow drums and acoustics); but I think that was intended. Pete's voice on this track is amazing and worth a five-out-of-five alone.

14. Simonize - 4/5 - I do think this is a great closer, but it's not nearly as great as most of the previous songs. The echoing voice and sweeping background are good, but not enough to make this song stand out. The hidden song at the end is much better; and would've been more fitting of the final spot.

Now, if you add up all the song's rankings, it comes to 66 (out of 70). That, for those who hate math, is a whopping 94%. Did I not tell you you'd be saying `wow'? If you have heard any of Pete Yorn's hit songs, I highly recommend you buy Musicforthemorningafter right away. This is a rare find in a music world that's more average than excellent. This CD is timeless, unforgettable, and one that will easily perk up your day and make you sing along. And if you haven't heard of Pete Yorn yet, do yourself a favor and pick up this album before it passes you by. It's certainly worth the chance.
