Free Music Review: What can be said...that hasn't been said? It's beautiful...

Peter Gabriel has always been one of my favorite musical performers. Ever since I was young, his work has always been entertaining to me. He signifies the very spirit of unity in music, always encompassing elements from other cultures and working with the finest performers from around the world. "Passion," his soundtrack to Martin Scorsese's film is perhaps the ultimate culmination of what Peter Gabriel's music is all about. There's not much to say about this album that has not already been said. It's a beautiful experience to hear this album, with songs that are both haunting and inspiring. But if it's the soundtrack to a movie about Jesus Christ, how can it not be inspiring, right? It would be so easy to screw something like this up, but Gabriel conquers the challenge and conveys the complexity of Christ as a human and as a divine figure. If the movie failed, the soundtrack certainly didn't. It encompasses the best elements of Middle-Eastern and African music and blends it with Gabriel's own flourishes, making it sound both ancient and modern at the same time. Songs like "Zaar," "The Feeling Begins," "Troubled," and "Sandstorm" are utterly frightening, while "A Different Drum," "Of These, Hope," "Open," and "It is Accomplished" uplift the spirit and dare to take the soul to heights of musical joy. Perhaps the best song on this album is the title piece...played in the film when Christ is walking up to Golgotha to be crucified. This piece is simply beautiful, blending four different cultural voices into a cohesive tapestry of sadness and sacrifice. Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn's Qawwali singing, complimented by an angelic choirboy makes for an ethereal effect. Shankar adds his own unique touch with the distinguished sound of the double violin on almost every track, and of course Gabriel's ambient electronics serve as the backdrop to which the whole thing comes together. In short, this is probably the finest example of the potential of world music to bring people together to creat beauty. It signifies unity of music, unity of sound, unity of people. People could learn from this album. It is a spiritual work, but more importantly a very human work. It is a masterpiece. Listen to it...
