Free Music Review: A powerful, unorthodox masterpiece

Through his trilogy of self-titled releases, Peter Gabriel tried to find the musical direction he wanted to take. He found it on his third album, nicknamed MELT. Now that he had an idea what direction to take with his music, Gabriel was free to experiment. Very few experiments turn out quite so well as those conducted by Peter Gabriel. His finest experiment is his fourth album, sometimes called PETER GABRIEL 4 but most often referred to as SECURITY. For SECURITY, Gabriel chose to expand upon the tribal themes he'd explored on the fan favorite track "Biko" from his previous album. The result is an album completely different from anything else Gabriel ever released.
You know you're in for something new when the album's haunting opener, "The Rhythm Of The Heat", begins. The song was inspired by psychologist Carl Jung's journey to Africa, during which he joined a band of drummers and dancers. The drummers and dancers would let the music control them, and as Jung watched this he became overwhelmed by fear, afraid that he may go insane watching the bizarre ritual. Gabriel really captures this on "Rhythm Of The Heat". The dark tone established by that song remains through the rest of the album, though it's never again quite so terrifying as on the opening track.
The second song is "San Jacinto", one of Gabriel's finest compositions. It's an immensely atmospheric piece and is also the album's most powerful song. The song also showcases some of Gabriel's best singing and writing. Like many of the songs on SECURITY, "San Jacinto" goes far beyond traditional rock or pop music and becomes an immensely spiritual experience. Too much of this on an album from someone as popular as Peter Gabriel could be dangerous, however, and Gabriel realizes it; he lightens up immensely for the next track, the very fun and amusing "I Have The Touch". The song, with its pulsing drums and shifting synthesizers, is about a man who loves physical contact with other humans. This is another one of Gabriel's better songs.
Gabriel returns to dark rock on "The Family And The Fishing Net", reportedly about the absurdity of traditional weddings, before lightening up again for "Shock The Monkey". "Shock The Monkey" was a surprise hit, spawning a much-played video on MTV and winding up as the opening song in 1987's PROJECT X, starring Matthew Broderick and Helen Hunt. It's one of Gabriel's most enigmatic songs; Gabriel himself says that it's about jealousy, but how one could surmise that from the seemingly silly lyrics is beyond me. Still, it's one of his best and most fun tracks.
The subsequent song, "Lay Your Hands On Me", is at times dark and odd, with lyrics made all the more disturbing by Gabriel's creepy reading of them. The song is also often a very emotional piece in the same fashion as "San Jacinto", reaching in to the human heart and letting our feelings be explained through the music. The following track, "Wallflower", ranks right behind "San Jacinto" as the album's most powerful song. Gabriel wrote the song after learning about the torture in Chile. It's an immensely emotional composition made all the more powerful by Gabriel's cries as he promises, "I will do what I can do."
The album is brought to a close on a high note with "Kiss Of Life". This song really summarizes SECURITY: it at once sounds like it was recorded with home-made instruments by African tribesman and like it was recorded by a glossy, synthesizer-loving musician of the 1980's. That's not what Gabriel is, though. True, he does love synthesizers, but no one in HISTORY made such great use of them as Gabriel did. What Gabriel is is an incredibly talented musician who manages to make enjoyable rock music that at the same time really speaks to your soul. And THAT is why SECURITY succeeds.
Many say that SECURITY is Peter Gabriel's finest recording. I would either agree or say that his third solo album is slightly better. Either way, SECURITY is a powerful, unorthodox masterpiece that proves, in my mind at least, that Peter Gabriel was and is one of the most talented musicians who ever lived.
