Free Music Notes for In These TimesFree Music Review: Not a disapointment. Hit: 5 Stars
I have been a PP&M fan for thirty years and I was counting down the days until this cd was to be released and I was not disapointed. The songs are very moving and Mary's solo on Jesus On The Wire is breathtaking. I am hoping for many more releases from this fabulous trio. Buy this cd.
Free Music Review: A wonderful suprise Hit: 5 Stars
Finally, after many albums, they sing alone! No chorus, no "guests." Classic, 100% PP&M, just like the good old days! Bravo.
Free Music Review: Their last bow Hit: 4 Stars
As far as I know this was the final album from the folk-singing trio, Peter, Paul and Mary, who had been singing together not quite continuously from 1962 until 2003... the date of this release. Some reviewers have complained about the difference between the voices on this recording and those heard on releases of the 1960s. You need to wind your calendars, numboids! Last time I looked it was 2010. At the age of 70, I sound quite different than I did as a callow youth of 25.
There's much good stuff here, including my favorite song of the set, "Some Walls." The album ends with two songs, "Oh, Had I a Golden Thread," and "Mi Caballo Blanco," which have the sound of a moving farewell bow, and end with well-deserved audience applause.
I also liked the medley of union organizing songs from the 1930s, which opens the CD, and "Jesus is on the Wire," which deals with a hate crime which was shocking 10 years ago, but alas has now become so common, as the US spirals ever deeper into polarization and Nazification, that it's back page stuff. "All God's Critters" is a song for kids that gives Peter, Noel and Mary a chance to do animal imitations. The album's low points are probably "It's Magic," most of the lyrics of which are sung in an unintelligible mutter, and "Don't Laugh at Me," which here at least gets a fuller performance than the usual. There are a number of spirituals, very well done.
This would have been worth the money just for "Some Walls." The other very good tracks are just more icing on an already satisfying cake.
Free Music Review: It's Magic Hit: 4 Stars
"In These Times" is an excellent set by the great surviving trio of the folk era. Peter, Paul & Mary's new set is more fun than we've had since "no free speech zones" were established by the Patriot Act! "The Union Medley" is a rousing collection of great traditional labor songs by Woody Guthrie & others. "Jesus on the Wire" is a sad ballad about religious intolerance. The traditional "Wayfaring Stranger" gets a peppy rendition. Peter, Paul & Mary have long had a knack for finding some of our fine young songwriters. On "Invisible People" they sing one cowritten by one my obscure favorites, Craig Carothers, about folks with troubles that most pass by. Mary Ann Kennedy, Pam Rose (of Kennedy Rose) and Randy Sharp wrote "Some Walls," a sweet haunting song, "Some walls are lined with gold where some hearts stay safe & cold; Some walls are made of doubt, holding in & keeping out." "All God's Critters" is a great song that's a delightful tune that children and adults love. Pete Seeger's "Oh, Had I A Golden Thread" ends the set with a stately melody. This is an excellent collection. Peter, Paul & Mary's voices have weathered some over the years, but their spirits are strong, as is their commitment to positive social change. Enjoy!
Free Music Review: please, pp&m! Hit: 4 Stars
PP&M have great musical talent- anyone who's listened to them know that. But why must they be so leftist? And sing positively about gay lifestyles? They sing about accepting gay lifestyles and then sing about Jesus! Well think - would Jesus accept gay lifestyles? Hmmm give me a second. I'm not saying its okay to kill them or tease them but its not right to go with the same sex. Then in the liner notes it has an inset about "People for the American Way" - thats a worse name than The "American Civil Liberties Union"!! It says that they have been "protecting privacy and reproductive rights" - hmmm what could that be - abortion, by any chance? I'm glad i checked this CD out from the library, bc it says a portion of their "royalties" will go to the PFAW. On the cover they look like nice people but once you dig a little deeper- whew! Come on, PP&M - leave your worldly political views out of your beautiful music.
