Free Music Notes for QuartetFree Music Review: Fantastic Hit: 5 StarsThis is a magic album. I've got the three Old & In the Way cd's and "Moonlight Midnight" is my favorite O&ITW song. Well, the version on this new disc outshines them all, IMO.
Peter's voice has only improved with age and Tony's guitar work on "Midnight Moonlight" is amazing. The Quartet's take on the standard "Shady Grove" put new life into an often recorded folk song. "Cold Rain and Snow" sounds more haunting than ever. Highly recommended.
Free Music Review: Masters at work Hit: 5 StarsWhen you get 2 artists like Peter Rowan and Tony Rice together, then throw in a coupla hot, thumping and picking babes, what's not to like? I am soon to see them in concert(within the week), and I am listening to "Moonlight Midnight" as I write this. Absolutely one of the best displays of "picksmanship" I've ever listened to. If you don't like this, you need to find a new genre of music, because this is as pure as it gets.
Free Music Review: It doesn't get a whole lot better than this. Hit: 5 Stars This album is a terrific collection of five-star songs by the greatest living flatpicking country bluegrass guitarist and one of the greatest living country bluegrass songwriters. The best blend of the traditional bluegrass idiom with contemporary interpretive flair that I've heard. And listening to Tony Rice play the guitar is a religious experience.
Free Music Review: Just like live Hit: 5 StarsI have heard many of these songs live, and this album captures the feeling of being there. Midnight Moonlight is one of the best jams I have ever heard. If you like Americana music, this album is a must have for your collection!!
Free Music Review: As Good As It Gets Hit: 5 StarsHi, guys. Nice to see some positive reviews of the Rowan/Rice album, "Quartet" up here. When I play this record in my kitchen, I always hit "play" again when it finishes. It is seamless. It seems too short when I get to the end (I want to start all over again, to quote The Band!). That's a good sign. I thought I'd never find another version of "Rain and Snow" that competed for my heart after hearing Muleskinner's version, with Peter's vocals from long ago. But this is so gorgeous; Sharon and Bryn's harmonies make it more ethereal; it's a different sound (Muleskinner is still 100% precious). Shady Grove is the "big O" notewise (y'all laugh). Haha, hey, ain't they all? That's a stunning cover of Martin's & the Osborne Brothers', etc., "Sunny Side of the Mountain." Peter has good ears for well-written songs in selecting
Patti Smith's "Trespasses." It's incredibly sensitive a song, a surprise, coming from a "punk priestess" (more to punk priestess than meets the eye). Gotta love it. Vicks
