Free Music Notes for The Ultimate Petula Clark

Free Music Review: Top of the Pops!
Hit: 5 Stars

I just love this CD - nearly every song is a winner. I first heard these songs as a kid and they sound just as good today. Pet Clark is a true '60s icon. Listening to this CD while driving home from work, I got to thinking that Ms. Clark's songs would make for a great Broadway musical - a Brit Invasion/swinging London theme.

Free Music Review: WHAT A BABE!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

What a joyous trip down memory lane! Before there was Carly, there was Pet, part of the "British Invasion" of the mid 1960's. Hers were the songs of our high school years [at least mine], and have never lost the power of happy transport. She was never a "sex symbol", just a pretty girl from "across the pond" who sang happy music, and sang it well. I understand that, at 75, she's still singing; no comment, as I haven't heard her current voice.

Naturally, some of the 21 songs here will be better known than others..."Downtown" was her BIG HIT, and it leads off, as is quite proper. But, there were other hits, almost as big, and they're all here...."I Know A Place"...."Round Every Corner"..."Don't Sleep In The Subway"...and, using "I Don't Know How To Love Him", from "Jesus Christ Superstar", to close was a nice touch.

This is a fabulous album, and a great voyage in a time machine. My two kids are in their late 20s, and find this impossibly boring, while I find what they listen to plain impossible. Maybe you have to be past a certain age, to have actual memories, not just have heard about it... Never mind...Pet was wonderful, and, thru this CD, she still is.....

Free Music Review: Delightful

Free Music Review: The First Lady of the British Invasion
Hit: 5 Stars

I've been a fan of Petula Clark since the first strains of "Downtown" caressed my ears in 1964. That song, and "I Know A Place", are to me perfect examples of pop songwriting and performing at its finest. I've heard them a million times, so, what could be so great about this CD? The digitally remastered sound, that's what. It is so clear that you can hear every sound of the instruments, every note from the back-up singers. As for Pet's voice, I am discovering a strength, clarity, purity and flexibility in it that I never gave her credit for before, even after being a fan for all those years. And then there's that delectable British accent. Another thing: 2 covers are included that were big hits in the U.S. for other artists. "You're The One" was by The Vogues, and I was astonished to read that Pet co-wrote this number. "Call Me" was a mellow hit for Chris Montez; Pet's version is faster, more swinging, and just very different in her hands. As for her other signature hits, my favorites are "Who Am I?" (trendy 60's self-examination), "Color My World" (trendy 60's exuberance, mildly psychedelic), "This Is My Song" (undying love), "Don't Sleep In The Subway" (wise understanding of the affairs of the heart), "Kiss Me Goodbye" (stiff-upper-lip acceptance) and "Happy Heart" (serene contentment). I never tire of hearing her hits, and she had a lot of them. By the way, I heard that "Downtown" was the only song by a female solo artist to hit #1 in the U.S. in 1965. Well, that doesn't surprise me. If anyone could pull it off, the First Lady could, and did.

Note: I noticed that another reviewer reported problems with the quality of the CD, but I had none. Mine is flawless.
