Free Music Review: The Sultan of Slam...

Collins' status as one of rock's best-ever drummers doesn't really jam him up all that much in this, his interesting first foray into the Big Band sound. After all, Charlie Watts has a jazz combo that works well. But I think it's a good thing that Collins chose to tread in the footsteps of Gene Krupa rather than going Watts' route--his full-forearm tom-heavy drumming would bury an ensemble of only three or four other pieces. I don't remember ever hearing him using rim-shot for the back beat--when Collins wants muted, he fires up his Linn machine. He has some good renditions of his own, Genesis and one Miles classics, as well as a rousing extended "Pick Up the Pieces" (I wonder if AWB ever jammed on that one onstage?). Somebody mentioned five more numbers from this gig not featured hers which are on a promo disc? Collins ought to rerelease that one as a "mini" (actually I would have bought this album as a double CD with those on it). This album is a good change of pace away from Collins' usual ballad albums--whether it would be a good style change remains to be seen. Phil, here's some advice: if you try a small-combo album, concentrate on rim shots and save them toms for the drum solos.

Free Music Review: A masterful showman...
Hit: 4 Stars

Phil Collins pretty much has the clout to do whatever he pleases in the music world. On one occasion, he can release an album full of personal, introspective tunes recorded by himself ("Both Sides"), and then do a 180 and beef up a rather weak animated film with some excellent tunes ("Tarzan"). So it was a surprise to me when Collins decided to take classic songs of his and Genesis and rearrange them for Big Band. Huh? His live shows have always been good but I would have never expected this to happen. Well, after seeing Phil Collins' Big Band live in Cleveland, I was convinced. What a powerful show! Collins shows that he doesn't even need to sing to put on a fine show. This live album accurately captures the Big Band as it was the night I saw them. It is a good listen if you're in the mood to try something a bit different. The version of "Pick Up the Pieces" is just awesome. If you like this cd, it would be worth your time to find a five-track sampler cd that contains more Big Band arrangements ("Two Hearts," among others) that was issued by Discover Card's "Private Issue Card."

Free Music Review: PHIL DELIVERS FINE "BIG BAND" ALBUM
Hit: 4 Stars

"A Hot Night In Paris" is Phil Collins and friends (including long-time Genesis live session man Daryl Steurmer) deliver a "different" type of solo album with this very jazz sounding CD. Released on the heels of his very succesful "Tarzan" soundtrack with its #1 single "You'll Be In My Heart", some fans might be turned off by Phil just drumming and no singing on this CD, but like his buddy Eric Clapton sometimes he just likes to sit back and play what made him famous. The standouts here are the big band versions of "That's All", "Against All Odds", and the "Los Endos Suite" which is a nice touch to an overlooked Genesis gem from "A Trick Of The Tail" which was Phil's first as lead vocalist. Also the sound is first-rate. A nice change of pace for Mr. Collins.

Free Music Review: It's about time
Hit: 4 Stars

This is Phil Collins' best solo project to date. With Genesis, he delved into progressive rock, experimenting with different sounds and making music that sounded more at home on classic rock stations than light-rock stations. I had high hopes for Collins when he announced his departure from the group. With more time to concentrate on his solo carreer, maybe he could actually make some music that was up to par with his Genesis work. After hearing Tarzan and various other things he had done, I had almost given up hope. That hope has been rejuvinated with this album. Collins is where he belongs, behind the drums, playing good music that you won't hear from every mother's mini-van on her way to pick up carpool. Excellent drumming, and just flat dab good music.

Free Music Review: Much better than expected ...

If you like live "big band" sound, then this album is for you. A minimum of Phil shenanigans (thankfully) - just very good sound from a tight band playing some thoughtfully arranged tunes. Great stuff, and I'd buy it again.
