Free Music Review: Phil Collins' most successful solo album still sounds great 25 years on
Hit: 5 Stars

Genesis singer/drummer Phil Collins released his third solo album No Jacket Required in January of 1985.
After finishing the 1983/84 Genesis Mama Tour, whilst bandmates Mike Rutherford would concentrate on his polo hobby and Tony Banks would do more soundtrack work, Phil went back to work on his first solo album since 1982's Hello I Must Be Going when he wasn't either playing with Robert Plant, Tina Turner, the Bob Geldof formed one-off supergroup known as Band Aid amongst other artists or producing songs and albums for artists like Howard Jones, Earth Wind and Fire singer Philip Bailey and Eric Clapton. The No Jacket Required album would once again be co-produced by Phil and Hugh Padgham plus have Daryl Stuermer and The Phoenix Horns returning on guitar and horns respectively and new bass player Leland Sklar.
We begin the album with the upbeat "Sussudio" (which was the album's second single here in the States whilst it was the first single in the UK) which was a deserved #1 hit here in the States for Phil. The bass keyboard line sounds reminiscent to Prince's "1999" and has a great horn riff from The Phoenix Horns and funky guitar from Daryl Stuermer. Next is a rocking track out of "Only You Know and I Know" with stellar keyboard riffs augmented by Daryl's guitars and the horns of the Phoenix Horns. We follow with the atmospheric "Long Long Way to Go" which is one of Phil's best solo tracks. The track features Sting (ex-Police lead singer/bass player/chief songwriter) singing background vocals. Next is another rocker out of "I Don't Wanna Know" which tells about a relationship ending, and having no interest the regrets the woman has in ending the relationship. The stellar guitar here rocks out and Daryl Stuermer co-wrote the song. We end the first side of the album with Phil's second US #1 hit being the ballad "One More Night" (which was the first single from the album released here in the US) and is one of Phil's best ballads. This track has all great qualities of a ballad (great vocals, nice piano work and of course the haunting orchestrations) and the ending alto sax solo from Don Myrick is one of the best sax solos ever recorded IMHO.
The album's second half starts with the third US single which was another US Top 5 for Phil out of "Don't Lose My Number" which was another great rocking number. This song is one of my all-time favorite Phil tracks and why it was left off of both of his Hits compilations is a mystery (Stuermer's solo here rocked out). Next is another great piece called "Who Said I Would" which is a funky piece with horns (especially Gary Barnacle's wild sax solo), drum machines and synthesizers. We follow with one of my favorites on the album which was another Collins/Stuermer collaboration "Doesn't Anybody Stay Together Anymore" which sounds similar to the work Phil's ex-Genesis bandmate Peter Gabriel did on his third solo album (which Phil played drums on a few years earlier). Next was the track "Inside Out" which was a great mid-tempo rocker and was a huge US rock radio hit (I remember what was then known as Album Oriented Rock radio stations in my native Boston playing this track alot). The saxophone solo from Don Myrick here was phenomenal and Daryl Stuermer's guitar solo at the end was superb. The original album and cassette ended with the US Top 10 hit "Take Me Home" which seems like a ballad about going home but the lyrics were actually influenced by the classic Jack Nicholson movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. The chorus was cheerful. Phil's old Genesis bandmate Peter Gabriel and Sting sing the background vocals. On the CD version there is a bonus track out of "We Said Hello Goodbye" which is a ballad. The track was initially a B-side and didn't fit on either the cassette or LP version due to time constraints on both formats so they put it at the end of the CD.
No Jacket Required became Phil's first solo album to reach #1 on the US charts (where it reigned for two months) and cement his career as a stellar artist outside of Genesis. To date has sold over 11 million copies in the US alone and won Grammy for Album Of the Year (I don't know because I also liked Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms and Rush's Power Windows alot from that year) although many today cry the album sounds pure 1980s.
Highly recommended!

By the time he released his third solo album, Phil Collins had become a near-ubiquitous presence on the radio, thanks to his increasingly mainstream work with Genesis, his own chart hits, and his indelible production stamp on other artists' albums. No Jacket Required did nothing to stem the tide of all-Phil-all-the-time playlists--which is fine, considering that overall, it's likely his best solo effort, ranging from the engaging rockers "I Don't Wanna Know," "Don't Lose My Number," and the silly Prince rewrite "Sussudio" to heartfelt ballads such as "One More Night" and "Long Long Way to Go," which features a vocal cameo by the (at the time) equally omnipresent Sting. --Daniel Durchholz
