Free Music Review: Terrific comeback! :D
Hit: 5 Stars

I got incredibly excited when I first heard about the release of a new album from Phil Collins back in late 2002 and had no hesitation with purchasing it. Upon listening to it, I can easily say that I have no regrets with getting this as a Christmas present. Testify is in my opinion, Phil Collins best album in many years and is a lot better than Dance Into The Light which while still a good album in its own right, is marred by somewhat dry sound in some of the songs. Testify on the other hand is a very strong album and ranges from enjoyable to excellent from start to finish. This is easily his best album since Both Sides and ranks up there with his great classics like Hello I Must Be Going, But Seriously and Both Sides. I am completely dumbfounded at the negative reviews that I have been reading on here. This album is a lot better than his last album which while good, wasnt his greatest. This newest release is somewhat clouded with a large amount of sappiness in some of the songs especially towards the ending but overall, the excellence of the music itself negates any of the negativities of this album. Some may think of this album as being very sunny and warm but as Ive listened to it, Testify has a sort of dark undertone. In fact, this feels like a combination of But Seriously and Both Sides at least to me it does. Much of this album is very experimental and benefits from the use of computers to create some awesome sound effects in a lot of the songs but this album doesnt even sound computerized at all.

The first track Wake up Call is easily one of the finest songs that Phil has composed in many years and ranks up there with his classics like Another Day In Paradise, Take Me Home, and In The Air Tonight. It begins with a light pop feel and becomes a very edgy track with a serious tone about how if one doesnt realize what hes missing, he will regret missing out on a big opportunity but thats just what I think. This song has classic Phil written all over it. If you can give it a bunch of listens, it will leave you speechless. This rivals Another Day In Paradise, In The Air Tonight, Both Sides, and Survivors as one of his greatest songs to date.

Come With Me got on my nerves at first with the annoying lullaby chime riff at the beginning but then becomes a very haunting yet sweet and charming song with a beautiful blend of rock, pop and jazz. The title track is my favorite song on this CD. It begins with a very dramatic sound but then becomes a very haunting and demanding love song and becomes a very intense and energetic power-ballad and ranks among his greatest classics in my opinion. Dont Get Me Started is another great song that has a lot of classic Phil sounds that dominate this track.

This Love This Heart is among the best and most hauntingly beautiful songs on this entire CD, having almost all of the elements that defined the styles of But Seriously so much that it couldve come right off that album. This Love This Heart is a very pleasant and amazing ballad and one of the standout cuts on this CD. The ending is very haunting. Driving Me Crazy is to me, the most energetic song on this entire album. It starts with electrifying acoustic 12-string guitars and becomes a very high-energy classic with a pounding pulsating beat and intense 12-string guitars. This song is a socially-conscious track about a stalker who will do anything to target his prey. The first single off this album is a cover of a song called Cant Stop Loving You which I dont know who its originally by but this cover version is just fantastic and among the greatest cover songs Ive heard in a long time. I especially like how when the song ends, the piano parts just keep going and fade out. Its great that this is one of Collins most successfully charting singles since his 1999 comeback Youll be In My Heart.

Thourhg My Eyes is another enjoyable typical-Phil track but isnt a whole lot to write home about. The final track You Touch My Heart is a very sweet R&B tinged closer to this track and is a very downbeat but very high-spirited ballad and brings this album to a pleasant close.

If you love Testify, oddly enough, I would highly recommend that you purchase Peter Gabriels most recent album UP as well. Although the subjects of these albums are seemingly opposite in nature with Up being about death and grief and Testify being about life and happiness, music wise, I can hear a lot of similarities with these two albums. At the same time, the opposite tones make these two albums really complimentary. Both are the best CDs of 2002 in my opinion. I sure hope that we dont have to be subjected to another long long wait after this. I completely object to the negative reviews dismissing this album as sappy and toothless. This is Phils best CDs in many years. Do not hesitate to buy this album. Its one of the greatest albums that 2002 had to offer.

Testify Poster

First all new collection of songs in six years highlighted by such tracks as 'Don't Get Me Started,' 'Testify,' 'Driving Me Crazy' and 'Least You Can Do.' Atlantic. 2002.
On his first album of new material since 1996, Phil Collins's crisp voice returns to the forefront, as does the booming rhythmic grooves and rich melodies. After taking time out to record his big-band tribute, A Hot Night in Paris, and the Tarzan original soundtrack, the former Genesis drummer-turned-frontman seek out more familiar territory on Testify. Collins successfully updates his soft rock sound with discreet electronic embellishments and spartan arrangements. It's simple stuff, but it's what Collins does best. Most intriguing is his silky cover of Billy Nicholls's "Can't Stop Loving You" (originally recorded by Leo Sayer on his 1978 self-titled album), but even originals like the effervescent "Wake Up Call" and the shadowy "Swing Low" echo the ambitious reach of his most popular work. --Aidin Vaziri
