All of Philip Catherine's qualities as a guitarist and composer are well in evidence on this recording from 2002. The infectious expressiveness of Catherine's playing ranges from delicate whispers to smoking ferocity and a keen sense of melodic clarity is seldom far from the surface. He is also a fine exponent of intricate,lace-like accompaniment and can often fire off sparks of inspiration behind a soloist. Catherine's guitar is superbly complemented by the trumpet and fluegelhorn of the accomplished composer Bert Joris whose unclutered,erudite technique and crystalline sound make a fine contribution to the session. The music is admirably underpinned by the warm,solid bass lines of Philippe Aerts and the sensitive,intelligent drumming of Joost van Schaik.
I will only mention a few points about the individual pieces but good music abounds throughout. "Summer Night" is seductively indolent; "Letter from my Mother" is a sparse,deceptively simple compostion with fine playing from the quartet; the mysterious and imaginative "Birth of Janet" is followed by the splendid "Janet" (Catherine's interpretation of this compostion has matured well over the years); "Time after Time" swings delightfully and "Laura" swings assertively; the perennial "Round Midnight" is soaked in a pensive mood and the lovely but all too brief "Le Jardin de Madi" lingers in the senses. The session concludes with the lyrical "Gilles et Mirona",a piece of music which would grace any recital.
This cd captures fine and varied music performed with skill,intelligence and style. It certainly deserves a high acolade and a wide audience.
