Free Music Review: The best in the genre since Ravel's Bolero

The acme of Philip Glass's music so far for me. Several layers are having their own lives. Each layer is created by an instrumental composition and each one has a particular texture and tempo. And the various tempos can superimpose themselves onto one another freely with contrasts both of instruments and rhythm. Some of these rhythmic harmonies are based on eight or ten notes repeating the same basic line with variations from ten to eight or even six. You feel the change but you have to concentrate to identify it. And these several lines of rhythmic harmony develop very repetitively on a background continuo that works on long notes, very long notes that create an embracing much slower hence wider rhythm that shifts from a temporal definition to a spatial vision. Even a line of five beats come up that creates a very complex syncopated music contained or wrapped up in a wide blanket of continuo sustained notes. And the rhythm is not so much created by the beats as by the harmonious composition of the notes that build that rhythm so that we reach the level of harmonic rhythm or rhythmic harmony. We are there in an original use of the main invention of African music that also worked and still works on double or triple rhythmic lines, a tradition Blacks have brought to America. These lines of rhythmic harmony are so complex at times that we may wonder if it is not our own hearing that projects the serialization of it, which would be a perfect demonstration of the creativity of the audience that lets itself sink into the music. This leads to an unpredictable music that is constantly changing though yet the notes are few and the basic rhythmic elements are only two and three. It is the use of different instruments and different assemblages of instruments that create the varying rhythmic and harmonic lines and the unpredictability is contained in the variations and also in our listening habits. We want to enter one pattern and keep it. As soon as many patterns are mixed we cannot predict, we feel lost. But this music is mesmerizing enough to make us follow it and enter it and then we live in it. This hypnotizing power of the music recalls to our minds the great classic of the genre, Ravel's "Bolero", that did the same thing with a very limited number of notes and patterns, but varying instruments and colorations.
