Free Music Notes for Autumn of the SeraphsFree Music Review: PINBACK is PEERLESS... proven again by Autumn of the Seraphs Hit: 5 StarsRob & Zach are in a league of their own. Creating lyrically interesting and intricately layered music... delivering album after album of mind blowing prog "math" pop rock. Can ya tell I like them? They have NEVER disappointed me with any of their releases. While there music is moody, sometimes even melodramatic... it is NOT depressing, it just makes you FEEL. Rob has the most beautiful, incomparable voice and Zach's beatific backing seamlessly blends - these men were meant to work together. Their unique transitions and sick riffs kill. Everything they do is ground breaking and unrivaled. The standout tracks on Autumn of the Seraphs (which has already made my hall of fame) are: the bittersweet "Bouquet", the defiant "Torch", the jubilant "Blue Harvest" and the hard charging "From Nothing to Nowhere". Amazing job guys - Pinback is & has been one of my favorite bands of all time.
Free Music Review: What an Incredible Disappointment Hit: 2 StarsI discovered Pinback a few years ago and was so exited by their music I bought every one of their albums and EPs. When Autumn of the Seraphs came out it was a no-brainer purchase. Then I listened to it. There weren't that many standouts, but I figured I needed to let it grow on me. Several months and numerous listens later I am still waiting. Some great elements are still there, peeking out now and then, but the core groove and beauty of their earlier albums is gone. What happened? Part of me hopes it's a phase, but another part worries that they peaked at Summer in Abaddon. Pinback is one of those bands I am proud to turn friends onto, but not one of the songs on this album would make that playlist.
Free Music Review: Possibly a new fave! Hit: 5 StarsAfter listening to the other albums of Pinback, I was really getting sort of attachted to them and their sound. Summer in Abbadon, was definitely their best when I first heard it. It had some great catchy melodies and beats an a wonderful rhythm section. Their guitar work is done in such a way with some nice keys work syncing along with their dynamic vocalizations, make Each and every one of their albums better than the last. So is the case with Autumn of the Seraphs. Right out the gate with the first track, they set a tone for more agressive record. Actually its fitting if you listen to the final track off the "Summer" album. I loved that song. But some nice twists are here this time around as well. Where the quietness and calm of some songs explodes in a subtle way. Its this subtle-explode that puts Pinback in thier own arena and separates them from other artists. It realy takes several listens to let it soak in. As a result I havent quite keyed in on any 1 or 2 songs as favorites, as they almost all great together. Though I must say they lesser favorite one is the last track. But its STILL not a bad one.
Free Music Review: Pinback does their own thing ... and quite well, too Hit: 4 StarsPinback caught my eye a few months ago by drawing comparisons to bands such as Death Cab, Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, and Beulah. I immediately downloaded Summer in Abaddon and thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn't notice many similarities to the aforementioned bands (I guess if any indie rock band uses a drum machine they are going to be compared to Death Cob now, huh?), but the album moved me. Pinback has another solid release in Autumn of the Seraphs, but with a steadier, less emotional tone. The songs are of similar quality, but the style is more calculated.
If you're new to the band, I suggest picking up Summer first. If you're already a fan, don't hesitate to add Autumn to your collection, but expect something a little different ... more Mogwai (which doesn't necessarily mean less vocals), less Promise Ring.
