Free Music Notes for Echoes: The Best of Pink FloydFree Music Review: Great Sound Hit: 5 Stars
I'm not a Pink Floyd fan and don't have any of their CDs but was exposed to them (who wasn't) as someone who grew up in the 1970's and 1980's. After a detailed listen of both discs, I felt the Echoes compilation was great. I enjoyed hearing songs that I hadn't heard in years, particularly "Wish You Were Here", the band's tribute to former frontman Syd Barrett, who was unable to enjoy the post-Dark Side of the Moon success of Pink Floyd. I am also of the school where I usually like compilations to be arranged chronologically, but that doesn't suit Pink Floyd at all. Instead, the songs are sort of strung together in a large song cycle like the band's classic LPs. Purists will probably gripe that some songs -- mainly "Echoes" but also others -- have been edited, but the arrangement works for the most part. The songs lean on the band's prime recordings of the 1970's but the 1960's and 1980's are also represented well. I was particularly glad that "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" made the cut. The only songs that to me seemed out of place was "The Fletcher Memorial Home". There are probably a half-dozen or so songs that could have been used in its place, such as something from one of PF's two "soundtrack" albums that predate 'Dark Side'. That being said, I am looking forward to more listens.

first of all this is a must have for true Pink Floyd fans and even more so for those not into their music as it entales 26 cuts from 13 albums.Animals,Darkside of the moon, wish you were here, the Wall,Meddle to name a few,not to mention the soundtrack from the movie The Wall.this is David Gilmore,Roger Waters,Nick Mason,Richard Wright(Pink Floyd)at their best 2 and 1/2 hrs. worth.you get all 7 versions of Shine on you crazy diamonds not to mention a full 16+ min. of the title album.if its a 1st album you get the effect of the group full blast although I can't concieve of anyone just having one album from this great group.so in two words BUY IT you won't be sorry!I know this Floydian isn't however I admit that no compilation(hate that term)can replace full albums that Pink Floyd has done.each album consists of songs not heard on Echoes but to say Echoes has no merit would be a huge mistake even though the song Echoes itself isn't as long as it is on the Wall album so having said that I still say BUY IT and to borrow a line I hear often:I can only please one person per day and todays not your day and tommorrow doesn't look good either. all in all its not the blunder that some people may think but rather a taste of things to come should you be fortunate enough to be able to find and buy all their albums.so I'll close with two words. GOOD SHOW
Free Music Review: Bravo Hit: 5 Stars
This CD set is a real treasure to all people who have taken an interest, no matter what size,in Pink Floyd. For the newer fans out there, there is something for everyone: great hits that sound familiar (I know the first song I skipped right to when I got this was Another Brick in the Wall Pt 2), and samples of earlier works, (songs like One of these Days and Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun). The booklet tells which albums each song came from- I built my Floyd CD collection mostly based on the booklet/insert. For the older fans, this has a couple of rare singles that really aren't found anywhere else, except Relics, such as See Emily Play, Arnold Layne, and When The Tigers Broke Free. In the true Floyd tradition, the songs are rearranged in a beautiful way- each song segues right into the other perfectly. If you don't know what I am talking about- listen to Marooned and the Great Gig in the Sky together- the two songs sound like they are meant to be together, though they came from two diffrent albums. I am happy with the selection of songs that are included- almost every CD they have made is represented- even The Final Cut. I am especially grateful for the inclusion of both Echoes and Shine On, even if they were edited. Everyone and anyone who is interested in this band should check this CD out- you won't regret it.
Free Music Review: Listening To History Hit: 5 Stars
Frankly this is the only collection by Pink Floyd that attempts to cover the history of the band and does it quite well. Read on...TO New Comers - Buy these albums first DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, ANIMALS, THE WALL, WISH YOU WERE HERE, PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN, SAUCERFUL OF SECRETS and MEDDLE. Enjoy these (and other albums) before exploring this collage of music. You won't be sorry. I can't imagine listening to this compilation and making any sense of it without thoroughly knowing these songs and the times in which they where written (a stretch of 30 years!) To Old Fans - Stop complaining! It's impossible to put a collection of Pink Floyd songs together that would please everyone. (i.e. Barret fans vs. Waters fans vs. Gilmour fans). If you want all the songs from one album then listen to the album! As for me, I miss `Welcome To The Machine', `Interstellar Overdrive' and `Brain Damage/Eclipse' from the set. The unfinished song 'Embryo' would be nice too! I think the non-chronological placing of these songs adds something new to the mix and the transitions between some of these songs create a mosaic of music just as these songs did on their original albums. My favorite is between `Us And Them' and 'Learning To Fly'. This is definitely not a Greatest Hits, to do that you should just own the albums!
Free Music Review: The best 'Best of' compilation I've ever heard Hit: 5 Stars
This album is just amazing. All the songs from different Floyd eras are mixed in together to make one big continous song or life story. Songs like 'High Hopes' from Floyds latest album 'Division Bell' flow into 'Bike' from their first album 'PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN'. The band obviously want you to see the contrast and it works really well. Pink floyd have released many albums and this album gives you an oppertunity to hear stuff from albums you dont have. I had never heard the 'Momentary Lapse of reason album' but the song 'sorrow' from it is here and it is just awesome. All the floyd greats are here 'Shine on u crazy...', 'Another Brick in the wall' 'Wish u were here' and of course 'Echoes'. There is an unreleased track 'When the tigers broke free'. It is a typical dour Waters number written about how his dad went to war but never came back. There is a cliche that all best of albums is a good place to start for new fans. That cliche most certaintly applies here yet, this is more of an album than just a mere compilation and with the new mixes and remastering and just the sheer uniquness of the whole thing it is definitly worth buying for old fans. It is my favorite floyd album without a shadow of a doubt.
