Free Music Notes for Oh, by the Way (Mini LP Replica)Free Music Review: Best way to get all of Pink Floyd's output in one fall swoop Hit: 5 Stars
Pink Floyd's mammoth sized new 16-CD box set entitled Oh By the Way is a MUST own for all Pink Floyd fans.
This 14 album and/or 16 CD boxed set (take your pick) was released to commemorate the band's 40th anniversary as a professional recording and touring band.
Pink Floyd becomes the fourth band I know to repackage their albums in their mini-LP sleeves in a boxed set after Queen did it with 1998's The Crown Jewels (their first eight albums from 1973's self-titled to 1980's chart-topper The Game), The Doors with The Complete Studio Recordings (the first pressing from 1999) and The Eagles' 2005 namesake box set of all seven of their Asylum Records albums (from 1972's self-titled to 1980's initial swan song Eagles Live).
I just got this as a Christmas present from my father (I opened but will not play and just have for collector's reasons) and also sold my regular CD issues of the Pink Floyd catalog (except for the Hybrid SACD of The Dark Side of the Moon, The Early Singles disc from the Shine On box set, the 3-CD Piper at the Gates of Dawn box set, Relics, A Collection of Great Dance Songs, Works, Delicate Sound of Thunder, PULSE, Is There Anybody Out There? and Echoes: The best of Pink Floyd) to get a second copy for playing purposes.
Many fans I see here are complaining about lack thereof in musical bonuses but the band have not many outtakes left and the band's policy was if it was not good enough to be recorded they would leave it in the vault (Canadian rockers Rush are the same way).
The real purpose for those who want this set is to get all of the band's studio efforts packaged in their original miniature vinyl album sleeves (take my word folks, Floyd were the kings of superb album art). Yes folks, Dark Side of the Moon has the original cover on CD for the first time in over a decade (not counting the Japanese mini-LP sleeve and the Canadian issues which all have original cover) and has both posters and stickers that came with the UK issues of the album and Wish You Were Here has black shrinkwrap and postcard. Also, the CDs have their original vinyl LP labels on the CDs which are awesome. To those who have two Side 3 sleeves of The Wall (I included), that is a collectors item and someday will be worth BIG BUCKS! (I did get two corrected sleeves and still have the misprinted sleeves in a collectable vault). Also, to those who have Ummagumma's discs mislabeled, that is going to be real collectable as well in the future (luckily both my copies from the two box set copies I own are the right discs). Also, on The Final Cut (although not listed on the gatefold sleeve) is "When the Tigers Broke Free".
The Division Bell is the 1994 album and is not remastered but am not sure if it was or not for this set as the album was mastered digitally in 1994. The remastered versions of the CDs contained in this box set are the 1992/1994 UK remasters of A Saucerful of Secrets, Meddle, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall (I will rebuy the 2000 Capitol (originally released in the US as the 1997 Sony) remasters of WYWH, Animals and The Wall as they were sonically superior to the UK/Europe EMI remasterings from 1992/1994). The 1994 remasters of Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother are here. The 1995 remasters of More and Obscured by Clouds. The 2003 remaster of The Dark Side of the Moon from the Hybrid SACD is here. The 2004 remaster of The Final Cut. The 2005 remaster of A Momentary Lapse of Reason is here. Lastly, the 2007 remaster of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
The sound quality on these CDs are AMAZING and superb.
In addition to the cool box and excellent mini-LP sleeves, there is an awesome 2 foot by 3 foot poster of images from Floyd's 40 years as a band and lastly two coasters with the front and back of the box.
To those who are true Floydians and want to make the plunge, either that or newbies who want all of the albums in one go, scoop this box up QUICK as only 10,000 copies were pressed and is already out of print and those copies still in the ether will be gone quickly.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
