Free Music Notes for Wish You Were HereFree Music Review: An Absolute Must Hit: 5 StarsProbably the best Floyd CD. I had an earlier (non-digitally remastered) version of this album and found that this version is really a treat in comparison. As far as the music itself, every track is a classic and a must for any classic rock fan. If you don't own a good version this album, you need look no further.
Free Music Review: Wish it was a little less drab Hit: 4 StarsSo Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" is probably considered their third greatest album in the normal consensus behind Dark Side and The Wall. It's not "Animals" and "Obscured by Clouds" are better than this album but this one is still a fine one despite being only five songs long.
This one starts out with a classic of a song in Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Beautiful, epic, pick your favorite cliche and use it here because this song has it all, even a saxophone solo at the end. It is later reprised at the end of the album this the first one is far superior. This song along with Wish You Were Here were written for former frontman Syd Barrett who even visited them in the studio during the recording, small world isn't it. Speaking of the title track it is an amazing song. But one thing it does that I love is that it is simple. Accoustic guitar with some great lyrics provides a nice sendoff to Mr. Barrett.
The one problem this album has is the two music industry rants from Roger Waters. "Welcome to the Machine" is atrocious and overlong. "Have A Cigar" is better but it's not even sung by a member of Pink Floyd.
Other than the rants this is a fine album. And for once a Pink Floyd album that seems to express hope, nostalgia and something more than just being depressed which is always a nice change of pace.
Free Music Review: Wish I Had Discovered Sooner Hit: 5 StarsWish You Were Here is equally as superb as Dark Side of the Moon and serves as a sequel with an emotional feel and blues-based, melodic background centered by outstanding guitars. The use of sound effects that the band incorporated two years prior are as involved again and help to enhance the mood and vibrational feel of the music. With having to fulfill mammoth expectations in 1975 after an phenomenal album like Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd only broadened their musical horizons but played with the same passion to create another album that offers proof as to why they were, and still are, so highly regarded as innovators in rock music.
Free Music Review: Wish You Were Here Will Cause You To Think Rather Than Let You Be Entertained Hit: 5 StarsIf Pink Floyd's albums were about happy or positive themes, I doubt seriously that they would have gone on selling like they have done and continue doing so to this day. Pink Floyd's best-sellers like Dark Side Of The Moon and The Wall cause you to think and not just be entertained. Pink Floyd's music was never about just entertaining an audience. If that was the case, they would have never achieved the success they did. No, Pink Floyd tackle serious issues in their music that cause you to take stock of your own life and that of society. Wish You Were Here deals basically with the same themes of loss, alienation and greed. Shine On You Crazy Diamond was basically written as a salute to founder Syd Barrett and what he meant to the band. The song basically deals with separation or loss (e.g. the breakup of a marriage or the death of a loved one). It reminds the listener that the lost or separated person is still with you in spirit. Their spirit will "shine on" even though they are no longer with you physically. Welcome To The Machine and Have A Cigar tackle greed head on, especially greed in the music industry. Like Money from Dark Side Of The Moon the songs expose the common human weaknesses of the rich and famous. As we have seen, the intensive pursuit of fame and fortune by rock musicians can ultimately lead to their demise. They end up shooting themselves or overdosing on drugs. In the title track, there are a number of exchanges or transactions going on. Sometimes the people we look up to as "heroes" or idols are not really the people we thought they were. They're phonies or hypocrites. They were lying all along. Our heroes became "ghosts". We thought they could tell "heaven from hell", "blue skies from pain", a "green field from a cold steel rail" or a "smile from a veil". Then we "wish they were here" when something bad happens to them like when they go to prison or end up killing themselves or when they are sentenced to die for some horrific crime they have committed. If you're looking for a fun-and-games, dance-the-night-away type of music, Pink Floyd is not for you.
Free Music Review: Vintage Pink Floyd Hit: 5 StarsHaving recently been to see Roger Waters in concert in Hong Kong where he with his band, went through some classic Pink Floyd tracks from both this album and Dark Side of the Moon, I had to repurchase an album which I had in Vinyl.
It was a great investment as the tracks contained on the album are marvellous from the 2 part 26 minutes of Shine on You Crazy Diamond, to the lilting Wish you Were Here with such brilliant, lyrics " we`re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year, running over the same old ground, having found the same old fears, wish you were here". To the classic funky sounds of a Have a Cigar with its great instrumental final 90 seconds of the track
All in all a great album and a must have for lovers of good rock music
