Buddy Songs is a smooth-playing slip of a disc destined to be the backdrop for a thousand kindergarten playdates--these are the kinds of songs you want your 5-year-old to bond with his friends over, and maybe to take a few lessons from. Don't expect a lot of arm-twisting: with familiar favorites from Toy Story, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, and Cars in the lineup, any kid worth his coloring book collection will whistle along happily. If there's a quibble to be had it's that the happy songs herein are all re-dos; instead of Randy Newman singing "You've Got a Friend in Me," its Riders in the Sky, and instead of the punchy Tim Buppert versions of "Fish School" and "Turtle Rock" (not from the official Finding Nemo soundtrack, but from the spinoff Finding Nemo: Ocean Favorites), it's Fred Mollin, who turns in several other tracks, too. The good news is Mollin is a natural at projecting the friendliness of the originals--he doesn't mess with the mood. Together with the tight-harmonizing Riders, who tackle six selections, he makes Buddy Songs way worth palling around with. --Tammy La Gorce
