Free Music Review: Pixies, The Band That Started It All

Various alternative-indie rock bands can be said to be the band that paved the way for what we now call "modern rock". The one band that stands out from all the rest however, is the Pixies. Each and every Pixies album has its own feel to it. Yet each and everyone could be nothing more than the Pixies. From the guitar work to the distinct vocals of Black Francis, there is no imitation. Many people say Nirvana broke alternative rock by injecting "grunge" into the vein of mainstream America. Yet if it wasn't for the Pixies, Nirvana never would of found that sound. The Pixies can be heard all over the radio today, of course it isn't the pixies that we are hearing. Its bands like Better Than Ezra, who you know were listneing to Doolittle when they wrote songs like "Good" and "Rosalynna". Of course, this isn't a review about what Pixies did for alt-rock. This is a review about the defining Pixies album. Surfer Rosa. While it is hard for a Pixies fan to choose which is the best Pixies album, everyone has there own, and the Pixies wouldn't be the Pixies without there varying styles from album to album. Surfer Rosa is the one that defines them in completion. Doolittle may be the one that gave them that small spotlight that they have recieved. Doolittle, the user friendly Pixies album. Surfer Rosa is Pixies from there core. In all there rawness. Sure you have "Come On, Pilgrim" but if "Surfer Rosa" never existed, the Pixies would have been a failed experiment. "Come On, Pilgrim" would have just been a little release that got a smidge of college airplay, been held highly in the hearts of the few people whose path it crossed and faded. "Surfer Rosa" made it a totally credible Pixies album. Made the Pixies a viable true to the heart indie band. "Surfer Rosa" is a must have for anyone who felt "Doolittle" in there soul. For anyone who looked beyond "Here Comes Your Man". There are so many complete Pixies tracks on this album. Yes, of course "Gigantic", but let's not over look "Where Is My Mind?", "Cactus", and David Grohls favirote "Tony's Theme". So I guess this isn't a credible review of a single album. But you have to understand, my love for the Pixies runs so deep, I can't seperate the albums. They are all one, a part of there short lived history. A history that came to a close at just the right time. Right before the Pixies could become "just another modern rock band". Their career was laid out perfectly and I hope a reunion never happens.
