Free Music Review: Decent, and a bit hard to describe

I'd never even heard of Poe, let alone this album, until a few days ago when I was discussing the novel "House of Leaves" with a friend of mine. Turns out my friend knew of the book through "Haunted", as Poe is the author's sister and this album is a "companion work" to the novel. We quickly made a trade: I loaned her the book, she loaned my the cd.
"Haunted" is a loose concept album that Poe did to work out the emotions of her father dying. (Technically, "House of Leaves" is, too, though it achieves a very different end result.) The album has a number of allusions to the book (and apparently vice-versa) though it is wrong to think of this as the novel's "soundtrack." Certainly, several song titles ("Exploration B", "5 1/2 Minute Hallway", etc) are straight out of the book, but this is a 'stand-alone' album that can be enjoyed without any knowledge of the novel -- as my friend's love for it demonstrates.
Parts of this remind me of latter-years Pink Floyd, which was dominated by Roger Waters trying to work our his own father's death; Haunted's heavy use of sound clips of her father talking help solidify that impression. There are also passages of creepy ambiance music, though most of this is what my friend classifies as "chick rock." Admittedly, much of it is well-crafted, though I've listened to the album twice now and as I type this I can't remember a single phrase or progression of music from it.
My tastes tend to run more edgy, so I'm glad I listened to it, but doubt it'll be finding much time in my cd rotation. Clearly, though, that's personal tastes, plus my opinion on all this is tainted by having read the novel first. Listen to the sound clips Amazon thoughtfully provided; that's the best indication if you'll like this or not.
