Free Music Notes for HauntedFree Music Review: One of the best concept albums ever. Hit: 5 Stars
I first came upon Poe's music when a friend sent me the Drive By remix of "Hey Pretty" and I was instantly mesmerized. I went out and bought the album the next day, solely on the power of that one song. What I found on the rest of the album astounded me even more.
The 17 songs that make up Poe's second album flow together, creating a whole that is difficult to describe. This isn't today's typical music CD - where one or two good songs are overshadowed by a dozen mediocre ones. While each song has more than enough charisma to stand on its own, taken together, they create a sum that is much more than its parts.
No review of "Haunted" would be complete without mentioning "House of Leaves", the novel by Poe's brother Mark Z. Danielewski. Book and album compliment each other, but can easily exist independently. The most obvious point of intersection to be mentioned here is the Drive By remix of "Hey Pretty", in which Poe's verses are replaced by her brother reading sections from his book. For me, having the CD made me want to read the book. The two function and stand independently, but having them both, finding the points at which they intersect, gave them both an even broader range.
So, if you - like me - came across "Hey Pretty" (which did receive plenty of radio air time after all), you will not be disappointed by the rest of the album. If you haven't ever heard Poe's music, I strongly urge you to give it a try - especially if you like concept albums.
Free Music Review: It's amazing to me... Hit: 5 Stars
Haunted is one of the most intriguing and fulfilling albums I've encountered to date. The depth, the layering, the richness of sound, pair with fantastic lyrics that while being sexy, powerful and provoking when taken in the artist's context alone, also tie in beautifully with the book House of Leaves.
I was introduced to the album and book by a friend, so I had the chance to experience both works together, which was a great ride. (Yes, I was playing the CD over and over; it's a big book.) But Poe's Haunted has never strayed from my CD line-up since. I love it most in the summer. I guess there's just something about it's deep colour and intensity that make me think of hot days and nights waiting for autumn breezes to come.
I love that she was compelled to stretch in various directions with her music and voice. Shades reflect the bewitching charmer, powerful rock chic, sad dreamer, little girl, and force of nature. And the whole while there's an under-current that gives you the feeling something's about to come out of your own wall to get you.
Anyway, I love it. I need more Poe.
Free Music Review: The greatest album since THE WALL...(even better!) Hit: 5 Stars
When THE WALL came out a friend came and grabbed me and said "I'm going to do you a favor!" and he put Pink Floyd's masterpiece on and we listened in awe. Let me do you a favor and tell you to BUY this album, dim the lights, have a wine and listen to start to finish.
This album is simply perfect. POE's HAUNTED takes you on a journey with an unbelievably crisp combination of delicate, raw, edgy, sexy, personal and perpetually fresh lyrics, music and sounds.
The production on this album is simply astonishing. Poe's voice is absolutely perfect to pull off this album and you can hear every word she sings.
Listen to it from start to finish as she takes you on a intense experience and each song is a different stage. If it were a movie, you could compare it to Shawshank Redemption (yes I know that was random)and POE is both Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins as she takes you through the pain and triumphs of life in way the transcends description.
Free Music Review: Near perfection! Hit: 5 Stars
I discovered this masterpiece, quite by accident. And my life is much the richer for it. For anyone who has lost a significant other, this recording is an absolute gem. Addressing the ghosts, that are flying around in her head, and the death of her father. Poe poetically sings, charms and dazzles with her alluring voice. The one drawback is my inability to listen to this with others. It's far to emotional and gripping. Why "Wild" has never received airplay is a testimony to the intelligence of the music industry. However we know the "industry" has always gone for the lowest common denominator.
Everything positive you have heard of this beauty is true. Beautiful, talented and oh so alluring. This underrated album, is just that. Pity that Poe has fallen off the radar screen. I believe Motherhood will do that. Maybe someday she will grace us again with her majestic talent. Trust me one time! This album is excellent. Buy it, and live a fuller, richer life.
Free Music Review: Best new music I've heard in a while Hit: 5 Stars
I was introduced to Poe through Conjure One where she contributed lyrics/vocals to both albums (if you don't have them yet, get them). In fact, my favorite song on the first eponymous album (and one of my favorite songs of all time) is by her: Center of the Sun. It still gives me chills every time I listen to it. So I finally got around to tracking down her own work, and I have not been disappointed. As has been mentioned by many other reviewers, this album showcases quite an array of styles, though it's always obvious that Poe is at the center of each song - what a strong, wonderful, effortless voice. A rather intimate album, as it is filled with constant references to her late father and obvious nostalgic flashbacks to her childhood. Some of the songs have taken a few listens to grow on me, but grow on me they have, and now I can't wait to get her first album (I know, I'm totally going backwards).
