Free Music Notes for Power to the People

Free Music Review: Poison Power
Hit: 4 Stars

This is different from what Poison has done in the past. I really loved it. Power to the People in an explosive song. Listen for your self!

Free Music Review: Swallow This Part II...
Hit: 3 Stars

Poison takes some tracks from their most recent tour, adds some new studio cuts for enticement, and you have Power to the People.. which, it should be said, has been done before, and slightly better, with Swallow This Live 10 years ago. But Power to the People will definitley please any Poison fan out there.

Starting things off is something very un-Poison, the title track, which is the first (and probably only) time Poison's ever sounded like they want to keep with the times. It doesn't work. The remainder of the new cuts are all first-rate Poison, however, the best of the tracks being Can't Bring me Down. C.C. Deville decides to take some spotlight and sing lead on 'I hate every bone in your Body but mine', and it's not quite as awful as the title suggests, it's actually quite good, but it does serve it's point in telling us why C.C. never sang lead before.

The live tracks are what you'd expect from a live album.. sped-up songs, plenty of hot-dogging from C.C. who honestly sounds like he's having the time of his life, and Bret Michaels working the crowd like a faith healer, seemingly reinvigorated by being back on the road. The drawback is that the sound quality is rather poor for an offical live release, it sounds more like a common bootleg at times (especially on Fallen Angel, which is sad because the band gives a stellar performance). I hardly condone studio-re-touching on a live album, but a little post-production to sand out the rough edges never hurt anyone.

Power to the People will quickly be snatched up by any Poison fan, and the new tracks justify the price of admission. But like most live albums, it's not a starter, nor will it change anyone's mind about the band, which truthfully, is sadly underrated. Take a listen to Crack a Smile for proof of that.

Free Music Review: Kinda pointless & weird
Hit: 3 Stars

The first five songs are new studio tracks, the rest being live stuff. This seems kinda pointless because the live material isn't the greatest ('Swallow This Live' is much better) and the studio tracks would have been better if it was a full lenth album insteaf this weird live/studio combo.

'Power To The People', is a decent song, certainly one of the heaviest Poison has ever done. Not bad 'Can't Bring Me Down' is simply GREAT, and the BEST part of this album. The lyrics of this song remind me of some of the one's on the 'Crack A Smile' album. 'The Last Song' is another typical power ballad. 'Nuff said about that one. 'Strange' is a good accoustic radio friendly tune. 'I Hate Every Bone In Your Body' is a little on the heavier side, and features C.C. Deville on vocals. But unfortunatly, since C.C. is a dumb-ass, this song just plain sucks.

The live chunk of the record is nothing to sneeze at. It wasn't very well recorded or produced, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't touched up much in the studio (if at all), and since it doesn't feature any new songs or surprises, its a total snore. There are some good explosions which help give you the 'Poison experience', but that doesn't help the music at all.

Had this been a full length studio record, I'm willing to bet it woulda been worth picking up. But alas, this release, really isn't, unless you are a diehard completest who must have everything.

Free Music Review: A Return To The Old Poison...unfortunately...
Hit: 3 Stars

I'm one of the few fans of Poison that was disappointed to hear that C.C was back in the band. The work with Richie Kotzen and Blues Saraceno was the best the band ever did. Crack A Smile was and is an excellent record. The music was Poison, the guitar was great, and the songs were quality. This album though... C.C is not a great guitarist. In concert he's pretty entertaining and his other band Samantha 7 is really good, but in Poison he just doesn't fit anymore. It was like taking a giant step back. The Last Song, Power To The People, and Can't Bring Me Down are all fairly good. But Strange, and I Hate Every Bone are pretty much crap. Bad guitar, bad vocals on the latter, bad music. The live stuff isn't much better. You can't hear the band, the songs are poorly performed, and we've heard it all before. Unless Poison hits us with a truly quality record, they're pretty much on a downward spiral. For some great Poison related music, check out Richie Kotzen's solo records, Samantha 7, C.C's band, (they're good because C.C doesn't pretend he knows how to play), and Bret Michaels solo album, all 5 stars!!! Pass up on this one.

Free Music Review: Cleaning Out the Closet
Hit: 3 Stars

It seems Poison was in the mood to clean all the stashed tapes out of the vault. The new tunes on this album are very catchy, and CC's "I Hate Every..." is really cool. However, the live stuff is low to medium quality. With "Swallow This" already out for years, I would have been much happier with more studio tracks.

Poison's website also said an updated version of this disk was going to be made available with "Rockstar" on it. I would prefer it be saved for a full studio album.

If you like Poison, pick this disk up for the studio tracks. Don't forget to see Poison live, for the true experience.
