Free Music Review: One star down for disc 2...
Hit: 4 Stars

I love disc one. It is fantastic. It actually got me back into simple rock n roll after years of listening mainly to more complex jam rock and jazz. I put it on my stereo one night when I was just sitting around my apartment a few years back, and I was bouncin round the room (to quote Phish). Since that time I have gotten back into this kind of music (elvis costello, the clash, etc.) while still listening to the other stuff. The Police were a punk band, I don't care what anyone says, and they wrote some clever, catchy tunes.

Now disc two is another matter. It sounds nice, well-done, but doesn't have that spirit the earlier music had. Alone it gets 2 stars from me, but disc one gets six so it averages out somewhere in the middle, I go with four. Disc one is more than enough to justify the price, however. I urge you to buy it, and wear out that first disc!!

Free Music Review: Good, could have been great.
Hit: 4 Stars

It's hard to complain when you get two cd's of live "Police", but I'll do it anyway. Both the performance and sound are good, but for your only live album, it should be excellent. The song choices are fine, but two cd's of two shows is too much. Unless you're a fanatic, one disc of live hits and fan favorites would be better. Actually, I usually just listen to disc 2 for that very reason. Of course if I was more of an optomist, I'd say it's two cd's, of two shows, full of all the hits and more. What else could you want in a live "Police" album?

Free Music Review: Still an interesting live model
Hit: 4 Stars

A perfect addendum to your Police album collection, this not only shows the tightly wound trio effortlessly flowing through two shows, but cleverly contrasts earlier and later concerts to cover most hits as well as present a fascinating live approach.

Free Music Review: Not their best
Hit: 3 Stars

I am a huge Police fan and have many of their shows on bootlegs and I have to say that these two shows are ok, not bad but certainly not great. The Boston show is the better of the two in my opinion. The Atlanta show from '83 is a very standard show from the Syncronicity tour. The Boston show seems to have more energy and the songs are extended a bit (like Bed's too Big without you, So Lonely and Roxanne) to show the band's amazing playing abilities. Since these are the only live Police discs I would get it if you are a fan of the band but try and get a few other live shows if you can. A couple that I higly recommend that are not too hard to find are the July 31, 1982 show from Sting's hometown in Newcastle. This is a great show from the Ghost in the Machine tour and they play everything and the energy from the band is great. The other show to try and get is the February 1979 show from Hatfield, UK. This is a great show and was the first significant live performance that showcased the band's talents. Try EBAY for these shows, they have them listed pretty frequently. Also get the Police Live on VHS as songs from these two shows are on that tape.

Free Music Review: disc is okay, but this band can do better
Hit: 2 Stars

1979 is the date of the first disc, 1983 is the date for the second. There is no need to tell you that one of the greatest assets to hearing the Police is Sting's voice. In 1979 his voice is simply pristine, capable of radiant vocal brilliance, and no exaggeration in that phrase is made. That being said, it reamins a real mystery as to why this is the live disc released by the record company, or Sting, or Miles Copeland or whoever. Because this band can do better. Sting with laryngitis? What is that? And I bought the disc? They should have called the disc, "The Police Live--Sting With Laryngitis" to warn us, but no. The outrage is that there exists live performances from this band that are worlds better, that will make your head spin, that are among the greatest live performances you'll ever hear from any band, period. How do I know? My cousin taped a performance over the radio, mind you, not in some studio, of the Police playing a place called the Whiskey at Hatfield Polytechnic Institute in England, in the same year 1979. They do the same songs as on the disc being sold here. Sting is a young guy here, his voice has not been mauled and withered over years of many, many live performances. That being said, there is nothing like his vocal performance in this concert that I have ever heard--it blows you away. His renditions of Can't Stand Losing You, Roxanne, and So Lonely, simply put, are unmatchable. This was a voice which could hit any note it wanted, with a clarity and power that was simply amazing. It is a performance barely matched by the best works of giants like Plant, Bono, and John Anderson, all great singers. He does an a cappella reggae section in Roxanne which is off the charts. Not only that, but the band itself has so much energy that you sense they are almost festering onstage, as they charge headlong into each song. Sting was addicted to coke at the time, and frankly he sounds a bit high in his voiceovers. I don't know if any of you out there have this tape, but it simply buries this disc here. The Police are good, even when they aren't having a good night, as in this disc, but when they are great, they are beyond the beyonds, as this saying goes. The concert in England at Hatfield was ridiculous it was so good. This live disc--get this--the first disc the lead singer has laryngitis, it's lke Jimmy Page sprained his wrist and they were selling a Zeppelin live disc--and in the second, Sting sings himself out early and is barely audible in the last songs. The fight should have been stopped, so to speak, and it's a shame becuase I can't believe this is the signature live performance of this band. Get real! My cousin should sell his tape and Sting should send out apologies to all the true Police fans out there. If I was in the band, frankly, I wouldn't want this disc out. They're just much better.
