Free Music Notes for DeadwingFree Music Review: Listen....then again....then realize it's 5 stars! Hit: 5 Stars
I had reviewed this disc a couple months ago and I gave it our stars. My reason: it's great but not quite "In Absentia" level. After several more listens I have to say I was flat out wrong. Its better.
"In Absentia" was a bit of a departure of Porcupine Tree into a harder sound. Deadwing continues that but I feel in many ways it returns to the more progressive elements, fusing them with the more modern sound in a way which floors me. Tracks like "Deadwing", "Arriving Somewhere But not Here", and "Strt of Something Beautiful" are epic, thoroughly fantastic, and totally different from what is played out on popular radio today. "Lazarus" is sublime, with lush harmonies plaid over a simple but beautiful melody. But "In Absentia" had great songs too. Deadwing surpasses it by being more of an album.
An album but not a rock opera, mind you, which tells a story in a chronological fashion. Deadwing doesnt really tell a story per se, though it is influenced by one. As a result, the songs are like looking at the series of self-portraits by Van Goh. Each is of the same subject and yet totally fresh and original, revealing new aspects of character, of life's burdens, of life's joys. I feel that Deadwing achieves this by peering at a tragic tale from slghtly different perspectives in the songs. The result is a fantastic album, full of fantastic songs.
Give it a listen and you'll enjoy it. Give it a couple and you'll realize just how great it is!
Free Music Review: MUST HAVE ALBUM !! Hit: 5 Stars
What can I say ?!?
PORCUPINE TREE has me on a hook here !!!
Each PT album I get leaves me more and more AMAZED !! I really DO LOVE this band !
This is a powerful album for the PROG-METAL lovers! Starting with "Deadwind", following with "Shallow". Pretty metal, but very, very rhythmic and precise. You will enjoy these two a lot. After these fast-paced masterpieces, you'll unwind to LAZARUS, which to my point of view is such a musical gem you will go back and listen it several times just for the sheer enjoyment.
The whole album is filled with sudden and unexpected mood changes (classic to PT's music) beautifully performed and musically astonishing.
Arriving Somewhere but Not Here: Incredible
Mellotron Scratch: what a beauty of a song, with clear-cut choruses and incredible ending (reminds me of some N'SYNC songs, not meaning they are similar in any way).
Open Car: Mind-blowing !
All other songs are SIMPLY INCREDIBLE !!!
Please don't hesitate to get this album, it's definitely a MUST for actual PT fans and all newcomers !! You will enjoy it from START to FINISH and will be still begging for more !
PORCUPINE TREE is SIMPLY FANTASTIC, with EXTRAORDINARY TALENT and AMAZING musical accuracy and execution skills. My BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Steven Wilson, Gavin Harrison, Richard Barbieri, Colin Edwin.
A very big fan from MEXICO.
Free Music Review: Deadwing Hit: 5 Stars
This new PT recording is one of their finest works yet. Another classic to add to their fine catalog of albums.
The song Deadwing is a fine example of progressive rock with a King Crimson feel helped by Adrian Belews guitar work, but still pure SW in essence.
Shallow is the best choice for radio play and it is clear the song was influenced with that goal in mind. It deserves full radio playlist rotation.
Lazarus is another example of SW's ability to turn a somber ballad into a beautiful peice of work.
With Halo the record really hits it stride. This song is one of PT's finest (among many) and the background guitar wash and guitar synth work of Adrian Belew only further enhances the power of how both the lyrics and music form into a entrancing, thought provoking song.
From that point on the album simply goes from strength to strength. In my opinion they have reverted to the pre In Absentia feel while retaining the power of that record. It is more progressive than their first three records, but attains the dreamy, floating qualities of those albums and using the power progressive techniques of In Absentia to fuse a new PT sound that truly puts them on a level with the best progressive rock bands of all time.
Combine this with the recent Blackfield album and Stephen Wilson is carving out a solid spot as a fusion rock genius.

Free Music Review: Porcupine Tree - Follow Me Down To The Valley Below...... Hit: 5 Stars
Porcupine Tree continue their reign as one of the most popular progressive rock bands in the business by releasing another solid album "Deadwing" in 2005. Comparison to their previous disc "In Absentia" abounds here, as "Deadwing" could easily be "In Abesentia" part II in many ways. The band continue their flirtation with progressive metal, but there is also plenty of melodic almost pop stylings to keep things from going to far out on the metal wire. Special guests Adrian Belew (King Crimson, The Bears) and Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth) lend their talents to several tracks and their influence is readily apparent. I have seen some criticism of the lyrics on this disc and indeed Wilson's words are never really overtly profound, but as on other Porcupine Tree albums it is the way that the lyrics are delivered that truly makes them stand out as something special. There are several great tracks to be found here including the title track "Deadwing", the pounding "Shallow", the uplifting "Lazarus", another rocker in "Halo" and "Open Car" The highlight of the disc is the 12 minute "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" which contains all of the elements that make Porcupine Tree great. Although I still don't think this one is quite as good as the band's middle period albums "Lightbulb Sun" and "Stupid Dream" this is still a great disc as the band continue to be a bright light on the progressive rock scene.
Free Music Review: Beautiful. Hit: 5 Stars
I have only just bought this album so I can't say just yet how it compares to other Porcupine Tree albums. However, after hearing it for the first time I can definitely say that this is an incredible album. Everything Steve Wilson writes is incredible. I was a little worried after hearing the song "Shallow" that the whole album would be like that...not that it's a bad song but it wasn't quite up to my expectations. However, in context with the whole album I have no problem with it.
All PT albums are different, I don't pick favorites because I like them all for different reasons. Like another reviewer said, this is a fine place to start if you are just introducing yourself to PT. If you are already a fan, I have no doubt that you will love this album. I'm not really sure why that one reviewer had such a problem with it, I listened to it and just could not believe how brilliant Steve Wilson is. I guess that's the risk when you continually change and evolve, each time you are going to alienate at least a few fans. Don't let that scare you off though, this is a wonderful album.
One of the best bands I have ever heard. And the hidden song at the end really just made my day because that is one of my all time favorite porcupine tree songs. It's re-recorded but I don't want to spoil the surprise...although if you keep reading these reviews you will find out.
