Free Music Notes for Good Gods Urge

Free Music Review: So incredably incredable.
Hit: 5 Stars

This is the first cd I've fallen in love with in like five years. Every bit of it miticulously crafted. Even it's awesome cover..... I had this cd for like three months before I got into it but it hasn't left my cd player since....

Free Music Review: Pleasing, Consistent And Low-Key
Hit: 4 Stars

After becoming an icon of alternative rock with Jane's Addiction and Lolapalooza, most fans ignored Perry Farrell's followup work with Porno For Pyros. Which is a bit odd, since "Good God's Urge" finds Farrell at his most relaxed and experimental, having a good time cooking up new sounds, composing pleasing melodies and enjoying the Tahitian sun. Although nothing on the album scales the emotionally dramatic heights of the best Janes material, "Good God's Urge" proves that Farrell has honed his songwriting skills to create tasty psych-pop that is weird and catchy at the same time (check out "100 Ways" or "Wishing Well"). The album has a predominantly acoustic tone which might upset some fans, although the old punk-metal Perry pops up on "Dogs Rule The Night", "Tahitian Moon" and the title track. As an overall statement, it is the peak of Porno's short-lived output; the artwork and liner notes are exquisite. As so few musicians these days actually want to create *art* in their music, let's hear it for the few who do.

Free Music Review: almost classic
Hit: 4 Stars

this is one of those albums you keep going back to every few months or years...intriguing and interesting and some of the songs are very, very addictive. a lot of depth both musically and lyrically, and overall pretty satisifying...IF you don't listen to it too much.

definitely a one-of-a-kind artifact of the 90s...the talent of Perry without the abrasiveness and/or over-the-top weirdness of much of his other stuff.

i'm trying to say why it's not a 5-star but i can't quite...something about his voice and just the quaintness of it keeps it from the top tier, but i like it better than any single Jane's Addiction album, let's just say. but Jane's Addiction is still better...see what i mean? lol

all in all, if you don't mind the "soft and fuzzy" and "kinda artistic" qualities then you should get it. but it's not for everyone.

i'd say an 90s alt-rock classic at 4.5 stars.

Free Music Review: Cpt. Beefheart is my father.
Hit: 4 Stars

I think Perry Farrell has broken away from the Jane's Addictionhigh with this album and finally treats them as 2 separate concepts. Not that the original PFP album was necessarily a revival of Jane's Addiction. I think it was just a bit too punkish in general. I'm glad God's Good Urge displays his compositional prowess at its best. I'm no expert, but I think Perry is at a creative peak with this album....at least, according to my tastes. And that's the important thing, right? Keep going, Perry man. I'm with you. Sorry about the 4 stars though. It usually takes something profound to yank 5 out of me....kind of like a little Bungle release entitled Disco Volante....or California....or any gosh darn thing they conjure up. Ouch, it hurts just thinking about it....mmm mmm mmm.

Free Music Review: Almost as good as Jane's Addiction. Almost.
Hit: 4 Stars

One of the things I like about Perry Farrell, is that he always expresses his love of art and life in his music, and this is no exception. Like the man himself, this is hippie, trippy, punk, funk, and good when drunk. A great mix of styles that comes off as tribal one moment, and dreamy the next. Parts of this remind me more of "Ritual de lo Habitual", than Porno's debut. There are also similarities between this and Perry's solo album "Song yet to be sung", though that's more techno-ish. Of course he can't stick with one project more than a few years at a time, hence another Jane's Addiction album and tour on the way. Good for us all. Whatever your liking, I'm sure you will find something to enjoy in "God's good urge".
