Free Music Notes for ThirdFree Music Review: Fascinating Hit: 5 Stars
That's it, quickly and succinctly - this album is fascinating. I haven't gotten all the way through it yet... but I'm entranced. I've always liked Portishead, but perhaps I wasn't as attached to their trip-hoppiness as others were, because I'm having no difficulty accepting this new offering. I'm not going to challenge all who have given thrashing reviews - to each their own. But I think Portishead is, with THIRD, challenging what we expect from music. Must music always be comfortable? Must it always, even when full of despair, be soothing? Must it have distinct expositions, bodies, rising action, climaxes, falling action, conclusions? I think not. And I think Portishead has done a fantastic job of not only answering those questions with a resounding NO, but showing us what else is possible. If you wish only to be comfortable and find closure... then stick to the old. However, if you wish to explore new universes of sound... check this out!
Free Music Review: This is evolution. Hit: 5 Stars
I'm not really good at reviews, so I'll keep this short:
Like most of the reviewers on this website, I loved Dummy and the other Portishead albums. Like some of the reviewers, I concur that this is not like old Portishead at all; this is a new direction, and one that, like Dummy was in its time, representative of the zeitgeist of this time.
The music is cold, alienating, and very complex. The harsher quality to the sound makes everything feel that much more deliberate; you can hear the synth, you can tell that the beats and bass were constructed artificially from ground up because it is that raw and unpolished. It brings something new to the world of music; it isn't a simple rehash of old tried-and-true gimmicks, and it feels extremely well thought out.
But at the end of the day it isn't for everyone. I'd suggest looking for samples/clips of these tracks before deciding to plonk down the cash for it.
Free Music Review: Well worth the wait....and more Hit: 5 Stars
I might be in the minority here, but I think Third is tremendous and is better than Dummy or their s/t album. It could be that I've been listening to their first 2 1/2 released (Roseland included) for a decade and have been so anxious for something new that I welcomed this with overly opened arms. I doubt that though.
This album is a journey to the center of your soul, and it lets you get lost while doing it. I've been listening to Third for well over a month now, and with every spin, it gets better. I'm hard pressed to pick a track that I think could possibly define Third, but if I must do so, I say it has to be Small. Beth lures us in with her smooth, hypnotizing voice at first, and like the rest of the album....you can get lost in bliss.
Buy it. Buy it now and embrace Portishead for being so amazingly sharp after after abandoning us for nearly 10 years....welcome back, P
Free Music Review: Stunning. Hit: 5 Stars
Portishead haven't released an album in ten years, and its been quite a while since I have felt compelled enough to write a review but this one is definetly worthy. If you are expecting something akin to Portishead's two previous, excellent groove-oriented albums, forget it. Dummy and the self titled album are there for whoever would like to go back and listen, but Portishead as a band have moved on with this stunning reinvention. Somehow the music here is both stark and lush, lonely and comforting and of course, Beth Gibbons voice is absolutely beautiful. "Silence" is the perfect opener, it feels like a car chase scene in a movie and really gets things moving, only giving way to the vintage beauty of "Hunter". From here on I was immersed, the succession of songs is flawless all the way through, and it begs for more listens. Simply put, this is the best '08 has seen thus far.
Free Music Review: Creative, bold Hit: 5 Stars
Portishead is taking some flak for this one. And I understand why: they had the audacity to veer from their previous creative path. People HATE that. But if you are one of those who, like me, believes that an artist should do more than just re-create new versions of their previous work, then this CD is going to excite you as it has me.
It is a brilliant, inspired, outside-the-box funhouse of sounds, beats, noises and moods unlike anything you have heard, either from Portishead or anyone else. This is what makes art art; what separates the creative adults from the wannabe children. It is a fine CD, and if your taste in music is bold, you will get hours of enjoyment from it. On the other hand, if you prefer pretty, shallow, hummable tunes, stick with your Backstreet Boys CDs and leave this one for the stout of heart.
