My only regret with the music of Prasanna is that it has taken me almost a decade to discover it (from when it was recorded in 2001). Starting with this earliest of his recordings available on Amazon (although he began recording prolifically in 1993 on the Carnatic label), I now look forward to exploring his more recent work (solo as well as in collaboration with others). His sound is clearly grounded in the Southern Indian Carnatic style (which has a delightfully droning/hypnotic yet lively lilting quality), but is also filtered through his youthful appreciation of the larger musical world.
This is mostly guitar music - solo acoustic and electric (recorded in studio with no overdubs), but it also includes 3 compositions with lush keyboard, bass, drums, percussion and traditional Indian instrumental accompaniment, and one poetic vocal piece dedicated to WA Mozart. Although it always retains it's strong Indian flavor it also reminds me of West African, European (Bach, and flamenco), American jazz (McGlaughlin, Metheny) and blues, as well as rock (Zappa) and noodling guitar (Kottke and Fripp-like) music. Although the more commercial sounding pop rock, cool jazz and Bollywood Indian tunes are more catchy and immediately accessible, my favorites are the nicely interspersed more experimental and meditative solo pieces.
Creative, eclectic, varied and always beautifully, tastefully done, this is a great introduction to Prasanna.

Whether in rendering traditional Indian Classical Carnatic compositions like Tyagaraja's 'Jagadanandakaraka' in a pristine manner or rendering Bach on acoustic steel string guitar or in his innovative Jazz/Rock and Afro/Calypso arrangements of Carnatic compositions like 'Theeratha Vilayattu Pillai' and 'Raghunatha', Prasanna remains rooted in the classical art of India and yet reflects all his influences as a composer, guitar player and improviser, all of which featured in this exciting album. Six tracks in the album are spontaneously improvised unaccompanied solo guitar covering a range of expression on acoustic and electric guitars. The title track and cult favorite 'Peaceful' seamlessly blends Ragas Mohanam and Keeravani into a Rock guitar instrumental space. 'The Nightsky', which features Prasanna's songwriting and vocals is a folk/rock tribute to Mozart's 'concerto for flute and harp'.International Music CDs
