yes, prince released this album only after the "defunked" black album was pulled, and then subsequently re-released. this album is perhaps prince's most perfect album...the black album being a close second...listen to them both back to back...but to say that one is better than the other is crazy. what did he release just after the whole lovesexy/black album "thing"?...."batman"...he played batman, gemini, joker, and other characters in that morality play of light and dark...prince is "the man" displaying the best and worst in human nature in the same mirror...pick any prince album, listen to it alone with your subconscious, and make your own evaluations...every album and every experience is different. peace.
