Free Music Notes for Sign O the TimesFree Music Review: Spectacular Album Hit: 5 Stars
I highly recommend this album to anyone who likes, well quality music. At first listen, one might think this is very strange, but it really grows on you. The second disc in my opinion is just a masterpiece in itself. It isn't Music from the Motion Picture "Purple Rain", it's actually a lot better. The best songs (in my opinion) are: Sign 'O' the Times, The Ballad of Dorothy Parker, Starfish and Coffee, Housequake (although pretty cheesy), U Got the Look (it gets boring), If I Was Your Girlfriend, Strange Relationship, I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man (the best!), The Cross, and Adore. Adore is a pretty everywhere, and not as accessible of a song as anything on Purple Rain, but with enough listening it gets better and better. As I said Before, I would recommend this album to anyone who wants to hear good music, and is tired of that pervert Michael Jackson.
Free Music Review: Double albums usually spell disaster.....(Not this Time!!) Hit: 5 Stars
A Double album that, after the huge success of Purple Rain brought him, allowed him to experiment with his trademark formula and produce an album of overreaching Soul, Funk, R&B, Pop-Psychedelia, Electro-Funk. Dispensing with his backing band (The Revolution) for this album, Prince opens with the sparingly beautiful Sign 'O' the times, and demonstrates that he's easily as creative without a backing band. This album appears to be something of a bleak social documentary for Prince, as mentions of Drugs, AIDS, and bleak imagery pop up at varying points throughout, making this his equivalent to R.E.M.'s Automatic for the People album. That's not to say that it's all brilliantly composed doom & Gloom, as upbeat tracks like "U Got The Look & Hot Thing" show Prince still has his mind (and finger) on the subject of Sex, although not a widely known as Purple Rain, this is certainly his most expansive & expressive album he ever released.
Free Music Review: Absolutely Essential Listening Hit: 5 Stars
People forget that Prince is, first-and-foremost, a great "Pop" composer. The range delivered on this album from "Play in the Sunshine" to "Starfish and Coffee" (the Man in his Beatle phase of songwriting) is astounding, and probably very difficult to perform. Prince makes it look, or sound, simple-as-pie. This was one of the early indications that Pop Music had a true Genius in its midst.
In fact, I'd say the five "essential" albums any new fan of the Artist MUST listen to would be 1999, PURPLE RAIN, AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY, PARADE, and SIGN '0' THE TIMES--period. ((Of course, to understand Origin, you'd have to go back to DIRTY MIND and CONTROVERSY, both very impressive records, trust me!))
Quite an impact, and certainly no small feat, considering Prince composed/produced/played ALL instruments excluding the live cuts. What a great listening experience! A fine time, a fine time...
Free Music Review: My favourite CD of all time Hit: 5 Stars
this is not only my favourite prince cd but also my favourite cd of all time. i just love the feel of the album. almost every song is a great song, i can't rate any song better than another. only three songs didn't do much for me - starfish and coffee, slow love and i can never take the place of your man. all the rest are gold.my feeling is that since his debut album, prince put out a better album than the previous one. they just kept on getting better and better until he hit his peak with "sign of the times". since this masterpiece most of his albums, while good, couldn't really get you like his earlier work. exceptions being the love symbol cd (this one rekindled my interest), chaos and disorder (don't know why but i really liked this cd) and the rainbow children (this is a great cd, one of his best). anyway, sign of the times is a must for your cd collection.
Free Music Review: A COMPLETE MASTERPIECE! Hit: 5 Stars
I became a HUGE supporter of Prince's music when I saw PURPLE RAIN in 1984 as well as bought the album. I was almost 9 back then and to this day, Prince is still my favorite artist. I have all of his albums. I bought SIGN 'O' THE TIMES on cassette in 1987 ... in Garland, TX (pure example of how great this album is - the fact that I can remember where I first bought it and how much I paid for it). At that time, a 16-song album seemed long. But, when I first listened to it all the way thru, 16 songs justified the length of the album. I love every song on this album from start to finish. I'm still jamming every song on this to this day. Although, Prince hasn't had the amount of commercial appeal he did from 1999 - SIGN 'O' THE TIMES, his music is still fresh whether he's at his best or at his worst.SIGN 'O' THE TIMES is a must have 4 every Prince supporter whether consistent or casual.
