Free Music Review: Overlooked and Underappreciated

Before I actually review this overlooked and underappreciated masterpiece, I should mention that the buyer gets a total of 22 tracks, not the miserly 10 tracks shown on the track listing (OK, In Held Twas In I comprises five of them). Now that the number of songs you get is clarified, let's get to the review itself.
I first bought this album shortly after it was issued. Even at a young age, I could hear that Procol Harum stood head and shoulders above most other bands I was then listening to and the passage of forty years has neither diminished my love for them nor dulled the feelings of awe I had when I first heard them. I say that Shine On Brightly has been overlooked because it is oddly missing from the music collections of many friends who own much of Procol Harum's other work. That it did not receive the attention it deserved at the time of issue may be due to the fact that it is in no way commercial. Sure, there was a single released but musically and intellectually it was way over the heads of most who listened to Top 40. Besides, the phenomenal success of A Whiter Shade of Pale was almost an impossible act to follow.
I like the whole album, but most especially Quite Rightly So, the title cut, Magdalene (My Regal Zonophone) and the most introspective portions of the epic In Held Twas In I which thankfully on this CD can be played as individual songs. As for the eleven bonus tracks, I most appreciate the mono versions of Quite Rightly So, In The Wee Small Hours of Six Pence, Monsieur Armand, Shine On Brightly, and Magdalene (My Regal Zonophone). Procol Harum is a very English band and Shine On Brightly rates with Grand Hotel as the most quintessentially English music the band has recorded.
What makes this reissue a such an essential replacement for any earlier release you might own is the inclusion of a very attractive and informative booklet that contains pictures, album/band information and commentary about each song. The quality of the artwork and of the remaster makes this Salvo issue the one to own. I did not notice any problems with "speed" or with Gary Brooker's voice that one reviewer mentioned, the album sounds to me clearer than it ever did. If you love Procol Harum as I do, get this one while it is still available at an excellent price.

With the success of Shine On Brightly, musical comparisons were being drawn between Procol Harum and The Band. Both groups relied on the same line-up of organ, piano, guitar, bass and drums. And with the release of their own Music From Big Pink in the summer of 1968, The Band were finally being recognized as more than just Bob Dylan's backing group.
