Free Music Review: Argerich's Debut Concerto Recording Remains Unsurpassed
Hit: 5 Stars

Martha Argerich once said in an interview that Prokofiev must have liked her; she described her uncommonly effortless way with his Third Concerto as though she never really had to practice much to learn it--it sort of came to her naturally.

It is hardly surprising that Argerich's 1967 debut concerto recording featured the Prokofiev Third, coupled with what soon became another signature concerto of hers, the Ravel G Major. Since then, she has played these two concertos innumerable times around the world as well as recorded both of them twice. As a matter of fact, both of them were programmed for this year's Proms season, although only the Ravel materialised.

Apparently, Argerich's approach to these works has essentially been consistent over the years. As for the Ravel, her second recorded version was caught by DG in 1987 (Ravel: Piano Concertos); in the summer of 2002, I had the consummate pleasure of hearing her live at the Proms, with the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester under Abbado. It took until 1997 before her second recorded version of the Prokofiev was made by EMI (Prokofiev: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 3 / Bartok: Piano Concerto No. 3); there are at least three versions available on YouTube--two with the RAI Orchestra (alas, not a great orchestra) under Eliahu Inbal (1998) and Tugan Sokhiev (2008), respectively, and one with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra under Andrew Davis from 2002 (an absolutely stunning performance, where the audience goes wild already after the first movement!).

My accompanying review of the 1997 remake of the Prokofiev Third describes the 'Argerich' approach in detail, which largely fits the Ravel as well--an unmatched combination of impetus, brilliance and sense of discovery, where every twist and turn sounds as much a matter of course as invented on the spot, with pacing as impeccably swift as entirely unrushed, and where her ubiquitous fire and abandon seems a force of nature rather than the result of human deliberation.

Argerich's studio 1975 Gaspard is overall impressive, especially in Scarbo. Her volatile dexterity can be taken for granted, although it is mostly kept in control here--as opposed to the totally feral 1978 live account from the Concertgebouw, where things do go overboard (most notably the climax of Ondine--Martha Argerich: Live from the Concertgebouw 1978 & 1979 - Schumann, Ravel / Argerich). Nonetheless, neither of her accounts is quite able to match the refined, demonic thrills conjured up in Pogorelich's 1981 reference performance.

DG's sound is decent for the time, if somewhat two-dimensional. Even though Argerich at least challenged herself in the 1997 Prokofiev remake, and Zimerman delivered the piano part of the Ravel with a higher degree of sophistication in 1994 DG reference sound (Ravel: The Piano Concertos; Valses nobles et sentimentales), I cannot see this disc being surpassed in the foreseeable future.

TIMINGS: Prokofiev Third--8:58, 9:01, 9:00; Ravel G Major--8:08, 9:03, 3:52; Ravel Gaspard--6:19, 6:41, 9:20

REFERENCES: Both Concertos--This One; Gaspard--Pogorelich (Chopin: Piano Sonata No.2; Ravel: Gaspard De La Nuit; Prokoviev: Piano Sonata no. 6 [Germany])
