I bought the first 8 volumes before Vol. 9 came out many years ago. Only a couple years ago did I finally complete my set with Vol. 9. After years of conditioning listening to Argerich and Howowitz's Prokofiev Toccatas, listening to Berman was a BREATH OF FRESH AIR. It was the first TRULY controlled recording I've heard! I had grown so accustomed to the dynamic and rhythmic unevenness of Argerich's recording (such as her absolutely terrible, ANTI-CLIMACTIC ending that rushes through the final octaves - yes, you ALL know it's true - we just don't usually talk about it because her tempo is so unthinkable), and hearing Berman play this piece was like hearing the music for the first time. It reminded me of the first time I put my glasses on in third grade: I could actually see the individual leaves in the tree and blades of grass. Trees weren't just big blobs of green anymore. Argerich's recording of the Prokofiev Toccata is like a blob of green compared to Berman's recording.
When I listen to Berman play the Toccata, I hear Prokofiev. When I listen to Argerich play the Toccata, I hear Argerich. It all depends on what your desires and needs are for buying this music. Just like all the other 8 volumes of Berman's solo piano music, this recording is very true to the score. While other performers insert more of their own personal "views" into Prokofiev's music (and in the case of Argerich, a little slop which people refer to as "passion" and "excitement"), sometimes that's not what one yearns to hear! Berman's playing is, as always, exceptionally controlled, pedal is only used in conventional places, and you won't get ego tempos from Berman like with Martha. Is your desire to listen to Prokofiev, or to Argerich and Chiu?
Don't get me wrong. I am just as amazed as everyone else by the fact that Argerich can play parallel chromatic octaves down half the keyboard faster than I can play the first three and a half notes of the C major scale. Sometimes I really do want to listen to Argerich. But when I want to focus on Prokofiev and nothing else, there's nothing like the clean and controlled articulation of Boris Berman.
