Free Music Notes for Puccini - La Bohème / Freni, Pavarotti, Harwood, Ghiaurov, KarajanFree Music Review: Wow!!! Hit: 5 StarsThis is just great! I can't imagine a better "Boheme". Karajan gives real life to this opera, as if it was on the stage, not on a CD. Pavarotti's voice is at its best, and Mirella Freni is the Mimì everybody would fall in love with. Panerai, Ghiaurov and Maffeo give funny but thoughtful performance, and Harwood's Musetta just makes you wish you were Marcello!
Free Music Review: words are inadequate, but I'll try Hit: 5 StarsKarajan is my favorite conductor and he did not disappoint me. All the singers seem perfect for their parts-I can see how someone could fall in love with Pavarotti's voice after listening to this.
Free Music Review: Dazzling! Hit: 5 StarsThe entire cast of this performance is terrific, but Freni and Pavarotti are particulary wonderful. Freni and Pavarotti strike just the right balance. They communicate the tragedy of Rodolfo and Mimi's lives without being too melodramatic or sentimental. A must-have recording for any opera buff.
Free Music Review: Beautiful, but it's not Puccini Hit: 3 StarsWith a more appropriate conductor, this could have been a 5-star proposition, particularly given Freni's and Pavarotti's idiomatic singing. Unfortunately, Karajan's selfish concern for shaping exquisite orchestral timbres is at odds with the forward motion of the score. At times, the action comes to life, but for the most part, this "Boheme" has more in common with an oratorio than with an opera. Raymond Tuttle
Free Music Review: Qui son? Son un poeta! Hit: 5 StarsI have returned to this recording, both on wax and on compact disc, for many years. Karajan displays an astonishing feel for the music of Puccini, and the ensemble of singers provides a delightful blend of voices which never fails to touch the heart of the listener. Elizabeth Harwood is a joy to hear as Museta. Freni is in this recording a Mimi beyond compare. This recording is an especially good display of the magnificent vocal gifts of Luciano Pavarotti. His voice is ripe, full, yet easy in this recording. There is, perhaps, no other recording of a complete opera which displays so clearly the fact that Pavarotti's voice is unusually large for a lyric tenor. Even so, his wonderful diction and phrasing make his Rodolfo truly delightful. This is Pavarotti singing serious music with joy! His voice, from the entrance in Act One is liquid sunshine. This recording is a must for every lover of Puccini!
