You'll gain the distinct and correct impression that I'm not a fan of Puccini (nor of Italian opera generally.) I bought this disc on a single, long remembered Radio 3 broadcast of hearing Tosca's lovely aria, Vissi d'arte... unfortunately the rest of the opera is not like that. If music and composers have any equivalence with colour and the Chakras then Mozart is definitely all Heart (Green) and above and Mahler all Throat to Crown (Blue to Violet,) then this dark, subterranean and Gothick piece is brown-blood-red and sacral. Not even the jollier, lighter and jauntier interludes that spring up now and again can do much to leaven or delay the inevitable car-crash ending. Callas makes this disc. It is an interesting, if destined for very occasional listening, addition to my record collection.
